Dog training for mountain-town visits: Canmore and Banff
Calgary dogs end up in the mountains. A weekend in Canmore, a night in Banff, a patio lunch between hikes. The towns are wonderful for dogs and demanding of them: narrow, crowded sidewalks, elk grazing on hotel lawns, hallways full of strangers, and bylaws that assume your dog is leashed and under control the entire time. Training for a mountain-town trip is urban training with wildlife thrown in.

Town skills
A heel for sidewalks, a settle for patios, quiet for the hotel.
A mountain-town main street in summer is a stress test: shoulder-to-shoulder tourists, strollers, other dogs on short leashes, food at nose height outside every café. The skill you need is a heel that holds when the sidewalk narrows, with your dog on the side away from the storefronts. Practise it on a busy Calgary street before the trip. Then add a settle: a down beside your chair that lasts a whole patio meal, on a mat from home so the surface is familiar.
Hotel rooms are where good dogs often come undone. Footsteps in the hall, doors closing, a dog two rooms over: it all invites barking, and Canmore's bylaw counts excessive barking against the owner. Bring the crate the dog already sleeps in and rehearse short absences with hallway noise. Parks Canada warns that off-leash dogs can trigger aggressive behaviour from elk and grizzly bears, so the goal is a leashed dog who sees an elk and checks in with you, rehearsed first on geese and squirrels.
- Heel on a narrow sidewalk
- Settle through a patio meal
- Quiet behind a hotel door
- Look at you, not the elk
Bylaws and prep
The Parks Canada and Canmore rules, and how to prepare at home.
In Banff National Park, Parks Canada says dogs must be leashed and under physical control at all times, it is the law, and some trails do not allow dogs; check the Parks Canada Banff trails page. Waste goes in a bin, food dishes never stay out at night, and Parks Canada suggests leaving the dog home if you plan to camp, hike or go into the backcountry. In the Town of Banff, the leash exceptions are the Banff Off-Leash Dog Park and fenced private property.
Canmore's Animal Control Bylaw requires a leash at all times unless signs say otherwise or the dog is in a securely fenced yard, and even in a signed off-leash area the dog must come when called. Dogs cannot be left unattended where the public has access, so no tying up outside the coffee shop, and they are not allowed at Quarry Lake or anywhere a sign prohibits them. Build all of it in Calgary first: sidewalk heel, patio settle, crate quiet, leashed walks past geese.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
What are the rules for taking a dog to Banff?
Parks Canada requires dogs on leash and under physical control at all times in Banff National Park, and some trails do not allow dogs, so check the Parks Canada Banff trails page before you go. Pick up waste, never leave pet food or dishes out, and remember it is illegal to feed, entice or disturb wildlife, which can bring a fine.
Are dogs allowed off leash anywhere in Canmore?
Only where posted signs say so, or in a securely fenced private yard, under Canmore's Animal Control Bylaw. Even in a signed off-leash area your dog has to come when called. Dogs are not allowed at Quarry Lake or anywhere a sign prohibits them, and a dog in a truck bed must be secured under a topper or in a ventilated kennel.
Can you bring a dog to Banff and leave it in the hotel room while you hike?
Check the hotel's own policy, which we cannot speak to. What we can say is that many dogs who have never been crated in a strange room with hallway noise will bark, and a dog that barks all afternoon makes the next dog less welcome. Rehearse short, crated absences at home before the trip.
Which program gets a dog ready for Canmore and Banff?
It depends on what is missing. On-Leash Foundations works on heel and loose-leash walking around everyday distractions, the core of a sidewalk and patio trip, while Advanced Off-Leash adds public manners and sit, stay and down at distance for owners who want their dog everywhere. The consultation recommends the fit, and will say so when the smaller option covers it.
