Country Hills off-leash area
Search for a Country Hills off-leash area and the City's directory comes up empty, in every quadrant. That is not the full picture. The City's own off-leash data files a temporary fenced site under the Country Hills community code on Harvest Hills Boulevard, and nearby communities have listed areas with City maps. Here is what we could verify, and how we build a recall for open ground in January.

Two City sources
A directory with no entry, and a dataset with one.
The City's off-leash locations page lists communities under each quadrant, and Country Hills is not in it. The City's open dataset of off-leash areas tells a fuller story. It files a site coded COU-001, the City's community code for Country Hills: a temporary off-leash area on Transit-owned land at 9797 Harvest Hills Boulevard N.W. A separate City page puts it beside the Harvest Hills Alliance Church, reached from Country Hills Road or Harvest Hills Boulevard, with perimeter fencing and a garbage receptacle.
The same page calls the site temporary: the land is reserved for the Green Line, and a smaller area is meant to remain once parts of the site are developed. So we confirm it before driving over, on the City's off-leash map and on the signs on site. On public land elsewhere in Country Hills, the City's rule is a leash at all times unless posted signs say otherwise, and dogs are not allowed in school grounds, playgrounds or sports fields.

Winter on open ground
Wind, white ground and a recall that still works in January.
None of the nearby listed areas is flagged fenced on the City directory, and an unfenced field in a Calgary winter changes the job. Wind carries a handler's voice away from the dog and carries smells toward it. Blowing snow and short afternoons cut how far anyone can see, and a dog on frozen ground runs faster than it can turn. A recall that held in July is a different recall when the owner is a grey shape in the snow.
So we build the recall before the field, not on it: a long line, a reward for every check-in, distance before distractions, and a leash back on once the dog is out of sight. A fenced site such as COU-001 is a fair choice while a recall is still forming, though a fence holds the other dogs in as surely as it holds one back. Functional Off-Leash, a three-week board and train at $3,030 plus GST, works on recall around distractions, Educator remote collar included.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Is there a Country Hills off leash area?
Not on the City's off-leash directory, which has no Country Hills entry in any quadrant. The City's open data does file COU-001, a temporary off-leash area at 9797 Harvest Hills Boulevard N.W., under the Country Hills community code. We recommend confirming it on the City's off-leash map and the posted signs, since the site is described as temporary.
Where is the Country Hills dog park in Calgary?
The closest thing we can verify is the temporary off-leash area on Harvest Hills Boulevard beside the Harvest Hills Alliance Church, reached from Country Hills Road, which a City page describes as fenced with a garbage receptacle. It sits on land reserved for the Green Line, so we would check it is still open before going. The City does not run dog-only parks; its off-leash areas are signed parts of multi-use parks.
Is there an off leash park in Country Hills that is fenced?
The temporary site on Harvest Hills Boulevard is described by the City as having perimeter fencing. Of the nearby communities on the City directory, Hidden Valley, Sandstone Valley, Beddington Heights and Huntington Hills, none is flagged fenced; the City marks fenced sites in brackets. A fence is a reasonable choice for a dog whose recall is still forming, and a long line does a similar job in an open area.
Can my dog run off leash in a Country Hills field in winter if nobody is around?
No. On public land the City's rule is a leash at all times unless posted signs say otherwise, whatever the season or how empty the field looks. Winter also makes open ground riskier, with wind taking a voice away and snow hiding the boundary, so we use a long line there.
What other off-leash areas are near Country Hills?
On the City directory's northwest list, Hidden Valley, Sandstone Valley, Beddington Heights, Huntington Hills, Evanston and Nose Hill Park each link to a City map. The northeast list includes West Nose Creek Park off Beddington Trail. We recommend reading the sign at each site, because the City says a posted sign is correct where it differs from the list.
