Brentwood off-leash areas
Two small community off-leash areas serve Brentwood, and they are different shapes of the same idea: a piece of green where the leash can come off close to home. This page reads the City maps for you, lays out the rules that apply inside both, and compares the two sites honestly for a dog whose recall is still a work in progress.

Two maps
A boulevard strip and a corner parcel.
The City's BRE-001 map draws the off-leash area as a hatched strip along the south side of John Laurie Boulevard NW, from Brenner Drive NW at the west end to Brisebois Drive NW at the east, backing onto homes on Breton Place, Breton Close and Bannerman Drive NW. A pathway runs its length, with an off-leash sign and a garbage bin near each end. Across Brisebois Drive the hatching continues as Charleswood's CHW-001, and Nose Hill Park sits across the boulevard, outside the Brentwood boundary.
BRE-002 is a parcel on the corner of 52 Avenue NW and Barrett Drive NW, bounded by the avenue to the south and the curve of Barrett Drive to the east, with a pathway through it and one off-leash sign on the Barrett Drive side. Both legends include fence symbols; neither map draws one. Inside both, the bylaw applies: dogs in sight and responding to sight or sound commands, a two-metre leash at most on the pathway, and leashed past the sign.
- BRE-001 along John Laurie Boulevard
- BRE-002 at 52 Avenue and Barrett
- No fence drawn on either map
- Two-metre leash on the pathway
Side by side
How the boulevard strip and the corner parcel differ in practice.
The two sites ask different things of a dog. BRE-001 is long and narrow, with John Laurie Boulevard along its whole north edge and a pathway down its full length, so every spot in it sits close to traffic or to the pathway. BRE-002 is a compact corner parcel, with 52 Avenue to the south and the curve of Barrett Drive to the east and one pathway through it. BRE-001 continues into Charleswood's CHW-001 across Brisebois Drive; BRE-002 ends at its own two streets.
A long line only earns its place where line and dog both stay clear of road, pathway and other dogs; on the pathway the leash is two metres at most. With the boulevard along all of BRE-001, that is a rare morning; otherwise we walk it on leash. On-Leash Foundations (two weeks, $1,865 plus GST) works on loose-leash walking and stay; Functional Off-Leash (three weeks, $3,030 plus GST, Educator e-collar included) works on recall around distractions. Readiness is about the dog, not the receipt.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Where is the Brentwood off leash area in Calgary?
There are two. BRE-001 runs along the south side of John Laurie Boulevard NW between Brenner Drive NW and Brisebois Drive NW, and BRE-002 sits on the corner of 52 Avenue NW and Barrett Drive NW. Both appear on the City of Calgary's off-leash maps.
Is the Brentwood dog park fenced?
Neither map draws a fence around the off-leash area, though both legends include fence symbols. We treat both as open areas: a dog needs a reliable recall before the leash comes off, and the bylaw requires it to stay in sight and respond to commands.
Is there an off leash park in Brentwood NW Calgary next to Nose Hill?
BRE-001 runs along John Laurie Boulevard NW with Nose Hill Park across the boulevard, but the map draws the off-leash boundary on the Brentwood side of the road only. Crossing over means following whatever leash rules apply there, so check the City's maps before you go.
Can I use the Brentwood dog park to train recall?
Only where the whole long line and the dog can stay clear of the road, the pathway and other dogs, which on the John Laurie strip means an empty visit; on the pathway itself the leash is two metres at most. Otherwise we recommend an on-leash walk there and practising somewhere more controlled. Small unfenced areas are for proofing a recall that already holds, not for finding out whether one exists.
Is there a way to train for the Brentwood off-leash areas without a board and train?
Day Training runs Monday to Friday at $650 plus GST per week, with drop-off 8 to 10 am, pick-up 5 to 7 pm and a one-hour go-home lesson each week. Private Training is a one-hour session at $150 plus GST with a written weekly plan. Which one, if any, gets recommended at the consultation, where a smaller option is suggested whenever it will do.
