12 Mile Coulee with your dog

A coulee is the regional word for a small valley or gully, and 12 Mile Coulee is the classic version: rough fescue grassland on the south-facing slopes, willow, aspen and spruce on the shaded north-facing ones, all tilted south toward the Bow River. For a dog it is smells, ground squirrels and slopes. For the person holding the leash, it is a walk that rewards planning.

On the City page

A natural area park with two mapped exceptions.

The City describes Twelve Mile Coulee as a natural area park in the northwest, established in 2001, with hiking trails, pathways and park benches, at Tuscany Blvd NW and Stoney Trail NW, open 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. The name dates to the stagecoach run to Cochrane: the coulee sat roughly 12 miles from the post office at what is now The Confluence Historic Site and served as a mail drop.

On dogs, the page is specific: two off-leash areas, one north of Tuscany Blvd NW and one south of it, each with its own City map. We open that map before the dog leaves the car. On the City's off-leash locations list the same two areas appear under Tuscany, as Area 1 and Area 2, with a note that a paved pathway inside an off-leash area is still on-leash. Everywhere else the bylaw default applies: a leash, no longer than two metres on a pathway.

  • Leash on outside mapped areas
  • Leash length two metres on pathways
  • Bags packed before the trailhead
  • Distance from deer and coyotes

Walking the coulee

Slopes, burrows and a wildlife list worth walking around.

The City's wildlife list runs from Richardson's ground squirrels and northern pocket gophers, whose burrows sit at nose level, to deer, coyotes, porcupines, red fox, hawks and harriers. We plan around it rather than test the dog against it. Deer and coyotes get distance and a change of direction, never an approach; porcupines are the reason we shorten the leash in the shrub on the north-facing slopes; and a dog that can no longer be handled calmly is a dog we walk out.

Terrain sets the rest of the plan. The coulee slopes south toward the Bow River, shrub takes over where the slopes face north, and sandstone outcrops line the eastern slope, so the leash stays short on descents. For a dog that drags or lunges at squirrels, On-Leash Foundations is built for that: a two-week board and train at $1,865 plus GST, with free follow-up sessions. Private Training is $150 plus GST per one-hour session with a written weekly plan.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Are dogs allowed in 12 Mile Coulee?

Yes, on leash. The City page lists hiking trails and pathways, and Calgary's bylaw requires a leash everywhere except a designated off-leash area, with a maximum of two metres on a pathway. Bring a bag; picking up after the dog is a bylaw requirement too.

Is 12 Mile Coulee off leash?

Not as a whole. The City page lists two off-leash areas inside the park, north and south of Tuscany Blvd NW, each with its own map, and they appear on the City's off-leash list under Tuscany. Outside those boundaries the dog is on leash, and a paved pathway inside them is on-leash too.

Is 12 Mile Coulee a good Calgary dog walk?

It is a natural area with ground squirrels, deer, coyotes and porcupines on the City's own wildlife list, plus slopes that change from grass to shrub to sandstone. We would call it a good walk for a dog that can be kept at a distance from wildlife and turned around when needed, and a walk to plan carefully for one that cannot yet.

What time is 12 Mile Coulee open for dog walks?

The City lists hours of 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. and gives the address as Tuscany Blvd NW and Stoney Trail NW. Early and late walks are within hours. We would still plan them around the wildlife list, because deer and coyotes are on it and a dark slope is a poor place to meet either.

Where are the off-leash areas in 12 Mile Coulee?

One is north of Tuscany Blvd NW and one is south of it, and the City publishes a separate map for each from the park page. The same two areas are listed as Tuscany Area 1 and Tuscany Area 2 on the City's off-leash locations page. We would check the map on the day rather than guess the boundary from the ground.
