Board and train vs owner-trained: where dogs are one year later
Ask where a dog is twelve months after training and you get two questions in one: what did the dog learn, and what did the family keep. We see graduates of every board and train program come back for follow-ups, and we coach owners in private sessions who built it themselves. This page describes what typically holds on each path a year later, as patterns rather than numbers, and what keeps either one working.

The board and train dog still sharp a year later usually lives with people who treated the handover lesson as the start of their own training. The place command survived because the family kept using it when guests arrived. Loose-leash walking held because the slip lead still goes on for every walk. The graduates who slide tend to be the ones where the rules relaxed by the second month, the crate became optional, and the free follow-up sessions were never booked.
Owner-trained dogs a year in show a different shape. Keeping it working
Maintenance is boring, which is why it works.
The habits that keep either path alive are small and unglamorous. Keep one structured walk a day where heel and loose leash are expected, not hoped for. Use place at the moments it matters, the doorbell and the dinner table, so it stays a real command rather than a party trick. Leave the crate in the daily routine even once the dog could be trusted without it. Ten minutes a day does more than an hour on Sunday.

Does board and train last?
It lasts as long as the household keeps the rules the dog came home with. The training itself does not expire; what fades is the family's consistency, usually starting with the crate and the structured walk. Use the free follow-up sessions early and the first year mostly takes care of itself.
What are board and train long term results like?
The pattern we see a year out is two groups, not two programs: dogs whose people kept the routine and dogs whose people let it slide. A dog that finished Complete On-Leash Foundations and still walks on the slip lead daily looks much the same at month twelve as at handover. The same dog with the lead in a drawer looks like it was never trained.
Is it better to train your dog yourself?
For a stable dog and an owner with daily time and patience, yes, and private sessions at $150 + GST give you a written weekly plan so the self-training has a structure. For reactivity, aggression or a household with no spare hours, board and train gets further, faster, because the dog gets daily one-on-one work. Either way, you are the one maintaining it.
How often should we book follow-up sessions after board and train?
Book the first one soon after handover, while the routine is fresh and before any bad habits have crept in. After that, book one whenever something starts to slip rather than waiting until it has fully unravelled. Every board and train includes them free, so there is no reason to save them.
