Board and train
Board and train in a Calgary winter
Somewhere in late fall the evening walk gets shorter, then optional, then skipped. A live-in program does not have that problem, because daily one-on-one training is built into every board and train, forecast or no forecast. It is not a shortcut, and the snow does not make the dog learn faster. This page covers what to ask before booking, and how to keep practising once the dog is home.

Before you book
Three questions worth asking before a winter start.
First, gear. If your dog wears boots or a jacket, or might need to, ask at the consultation how gear is handled rather than assuming. Second, access. Snow and ice change the drive across the city, so ask about drop-off and pick-up arrangements and allow time. Third, the calendar. Programs run two to six weeks, so a January start puts the handover in deep winter; decide whether you would rather do your first weeks of home practice in February or wait for spring.
What does not change is the program itself. Every board and train includes daily one-on-one training, a structured routine, socialization, enrichment, clean and comfortable accommodation with fresh water and individual care, social-media updates plus personal phone or email check-ins, a handover lesson and free follow-up sessions. Visits are gently discouraged, since they get in the way of that routine. We do not run a winter curriculum or claim that cold-weather training produces a sturdier dog. The season is a scheduling question, not a training method.
- Ask how gear is handled
- Allow time for icy drives
- Pick the handover date deliberately
- Same inclusions as any season
After the handover
The plan you take home has to survive the dark.
The handover lesson covers what the dog has been working on and how you practise it, and in winter that includes footing. Glare ice is not a training surface; it is a way to get hurt. Practise on a cleared and gritted stretch, a shovelled yard or indoors, in short pieces. Every board and train includes free follow-up sessions, and we would rather see you in January with a small question than in April with a big one.
Winter is also when travel piles up. Graduate boarding is $65 plus GST per night, for graduates and existing clients only. A ten-night holiday trip comes to $650 plus GST. It is boarding, not a second program, so do not expect it to stand in for the follow-up sessions or for your own practice; ask at the consultation what a stay includes. If you know a December trip is coming, mention it when you book the program, so both calendars are settled at once.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Is a board and train in winter in Calgary a good idea?
It can be, for the plain reason that a live-in program trains daily whether or not you feel like walking in the dark. It is not a better season for learning, and we do not claim habits built in the cold last longer. At the consultation we recommend the program that fits, and say so when a smaller one would do.
How does dog training in winter work in a board and train?
The inclusions are the same as any season: daily one-on-one training and a structured routine, with a handover lesson and free follow-up sessions. How gear, cold and footing are handled for your particular dog is a question for the consultation, and worth asking directly.
Can we send our dog to training over the winter and board them over the holidays too?
A board and train runs for its program length, from two to six weeks depending on the program. Afterwards, graduate boarding at $65 plus GST per night is available to graduates and existing clients. Mention the holiday dates at the consultation so both can be planned together.
Will winter training still work once the snow is gone?
We cannot promise that, for winter or any other season; what a dog keeps doing depends on what keeps getting practised. The handover lesson covers how to do that, and the free follow-up sessions included in every board and train are there when something slips as the seasons change.
