Board & train
Board and train for Golden Retrievers
A golden is the dog everyone wants to pet, which is the problem. Many goldens learn sit in an afternoon, then forget it exists the moment a stranger smiles. Add a mouth that wants to hold something, a nose that finds every crumb, and legs that head for any water in sight, and you have a dog who is easy to teach and hard to proof. A live-in program is mostly proofing.

Daily work
Friendly is the skill that needs proofing.
Many goldens know the words already. What they lack is the habit of doing them while a jogger passes, a child squeals or a pond glitters down the path. Training takes sit, down, place and heel out of the kitchen and into the real world, using markers and rewards, then adding distraction in small steps. Greeting work is specific: four feet on the floor, a sit that holds while a hand reaches out, and a release word before the wiggle.
Mouthiness gets its own track. A golden who grabs sleeves or carries off a glove is often asking for a job for the mouth, so the routine gives it legal things to hold and teaches drop and leave it against food and found objects. On-Leash Foundations is built for the dragging, everyone-is-a-friend golden. Functional Off-Leash is built for a golden with decent manners who wants the river path, and includes an Educator remote collar and the education to use it.
- Four feet on the floor
- Leave it against food
- Recall away from water
- Place while guests arrive
Keeping it
Generalizing is the owner's half.
Your golden has spent weeks rehearsing calm greetings and loose leashes with one handler in many places. The next job is making it work with you, which is what the handover lesson is for: you learn the markers, the leash handling and the exact rules around doors, food and water. Many goldens will offer the old jump once to check whether it still pays. The follow-up session is there for whatever crept back. For the method itself, see our guide to training a Golden Retriever.
Program fit gets honest at the consultation. A golden who pulls and jumps but has no fear or edge is a different conversation from one who guards food or has started snapping at hands near the bowl; Behaviour Rehab is the program built for that, after a full assessment. You will be asked what the dog does when guests arrive, how it behaves around water and whether it has ever held on. The recommendation may well be a smaller program than you expected.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
What does a golden retriever board and train work on?
For many goldens the list is greeting without jumping, walking on a loose leash past people and dogs, leaving food and found objects, and holding place while the doorbell rings. Off-leash programs work on recall around distractions, water included. The specifics are set after the consultation.
Which program fits a board and train golden retriever that pulls and jumps?
On-Leash Foundations is built for dogs who drag and treat the leash as a suggestion, and it covers heel, place and working around everyday distractions over two weeks. If the dog also needs recall around ponds and wildlife, Functional Off-Leash is built for that. The consultation recommends the fit, and will say when the shorter program is enough.
Does a golden retriever training program help a dog that already knows the commands?
Knowing sit and doing sit beside a stranger holding a sandwich are different skills. A live-in program spends its days on the second one, with a handler who can set up the distractions at the right distance. The handover lesson then transfers the proofed version to you.
Will a golden stop being friendly after board and train?
The training goal is a golden who is friendly on cue rather than on impulse: greeting after a sit and a release, rather than instead of one. Every dog is different, so we do not promise how a personality will look afterward. Play, socialization and enrichment are part of every day in the program.
