Board & train

Board and train for German Shepherds

A German Shepherd notices everything: the courier, the neighbour's gate, the dog across the road, your mood. Give that brain nothing to do and it often invents a job, usually surveillance. A live-in program hands the dog a schedule, a handler who means it, and structured work every day. This page is about program fit for the breed; the method lives in our German Shepherd training guide.

What the days hold

A working brain gets a working week.

Many shepherds arrive with two habits that feed each other: a leash that goes tight when another dog appears, and a hair-trigger alert bark at windows and fence lines. Training is built on marker and reward work on heel, place and down-stay, proofed in the real world, where the breed's wariness of strangers is worked at a distance the dog can handle. Place is taught as the off switch. Heel is taught as the job.

Program fit follows the dog, not the breed label. On-Leash Foundations is built for a pulling, scanning shepherd whose manners are otherwise intact. Functional Off-Leash works on reliable recall around distractions and off-leash house manners for a shepherd with decent manners. Advanced Off-Leash adds off-leash heel, distance commands and public manners for a shepherd who already handles public spaces with a settled head. Behaviour Rehab is built for wariness that has become lunging, growling or a bite history, and begins with a full assessment.

Back at home

The dog keeps the habits you keep.

The dog you pick up has spent weeks practising calm routines around everyday triggers, and the handover lesson is where you learn the same markers, the same leash handling and the same rules for place. A shepherd often tests whether the new rules travel with the new handler, so the follow-up session tightens anything that slipped. The owner's share with this breed is a daily job: a structured walk, a few minutes of obedience, and the same answer every time the window alert starts.

The consultation sorts a bored shepherd from a fearful one, and the two call for different programs. Expect honest questions about what the dog does when a stranger reaches the door, how much work it gets on a weekday, and whether anyone has been nipped. The recommendation can be a smaller program than the one you came in asking about, and we will say so.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Is a German Shepherd board and train different from a regular board and train?

The structure is the same: daily one-on-one training, a routine, enrichment and a handover lesson. What changes is the emphasis. For many shepherds that means more work on neutrality around strangers and dogs, a reliable place command, and tasks that give the dog's drive somewhere to go.

Which program fits a board and train German Shepherd?

It depends on what the dog is doing now. On-Leash Foundations is built for a strong puller with a steady temperament; Functional Off-Leash works on recall around distractions; Advanced Off-Leash adds off-leash heel and distance commands; Behaviour Rehab is built for reactivity, suspicion and bite histories. The consultation makes the call, and recommends a smaller program when that is enough.

What does a German Shepherd training program include?

Every board and train includes daily one-on-one training, a structured routine, socialization, enrichment, updates to you, a handover lesson and free follow-up sessions. Off-leash programs include an Educator remote collar and the education to use it properly. Tools are matched to the individual dog, not the breed.

Will a shepherd still listen to its owner after a board and train?

The handover lesson exists for exactly that question. You learn the markers, leash handling and rules the dog has been living by, then practise them with a trainer watching. How well it holds depends on how consistently those rules continue at home, which is why follow-ups are included.
