Board and train
Board and train for first-time dog owners
Nobody tells you how much of the first year is guesswork. You read three contradictory articles, buy a harness the dog outgrows in a month, and wonder whether sending the dog away for a few weeks means missing the part where you become their person. Here is what a board and train offers a beginner, what it leaves to you, and the questions worth asking before you book.

Foundations and instruction
What the dog works on, and what you are shown at handover.
During a board and train your dog works one-on-one every day, inside a structured routine, on the skills its program lists: leash manners, name recognition, sit, down, place and crate comfort for a puppy, or loose-leash walking, heel, sit, stay, down and place for an older dog. For a new owner, the handover lesson may be the more valuable half. We show you how the cues are given, how the slip lead and training collar fit, and how we mark and reward.
What a program cannot do is practise for you afterwards. Many dogs generalize slowly, and a skill that only ever happened in our routine tends to fade at home if nobody asks for it. Daily practice is yours: the same cue words from everyone in the house, the same expectation at the door, place during dinner. The free follow-up sessions are there for when something slips, and On-Leash Foundations adds lifetime phone and email support, which a first-time owner tends to lean on.

Choosing as a beginner
Puppy Fundamentals, On-Leash Foundations or Private Training, compared.
Puppy Fundamentals is built for puppies in their key learning window: three weeks, $2,775 + GST, working on crate comfort, name recognition, leash manners, sit, down, place and new sights and sounds, with a slip lead and training collar to take home. On-Leash Foundations is built for dogs who drag, lunge at squirrels or treat the leash as a suggestion: two weeks, $1,865 + GST, working on loose-leash walking, heel, sit, stay, down and place around everyday distractions, with lifetime phone and email support.
Private Training is built for hands-on owners who want to do the teaching themselves, with a professional reading over their shoulder: one-hour sessions at $150 + GST, each with a written weekly plan customized to your home. We recommend the program at the consultation, and a smaller one when it is enough. On the bond: many dogs attach to the people who feed, walk and live with them day after day, and a few weeks away is a short chapter in a long story.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Is board and train a good idea for a first-time dog owner?
It can be, because the handover lesson teaches the owner alongside the dog: you are shown the cues, the marker and reward, and how the tools fit rather than working it out alone. The program does the daily teaching during the stay; what happens afterwards depends on the practice at home. Whether it is the right fit for your dog is what the consultation is for.
Will the dog bond with the trainer instead of the owner after a board and train?
We cannot speak for every dog, but in our experience many dogs settle back into the household they live with once the daily routine is theirs again. After the handover lesson you are the one giving the cues and holding the routine every day. A few weeks away is a short stretch in a dog's life with you.
Which program suits a beginner dog owner: the puppy program, on-leash, or private lessons?
Puppy Fundamentals is built for puppies in their key learning window and works on crate comfort, name recognition and early socialization over three weeks at $2,775 + GST. On-Leash Foundations is built for dogs who pull and works on loose-leash walking, heel and place over two weeks at $1,865 + GST. Private Training is built for owners who want to do the teaching themselves, one hour at $150 + GST with a written weekly plan.
What does a first-time owner actually have to do after board and train?
Come to the handover lesson, then practise what it covered every day: the cue words, the loose leash, place at the door and during dinner. Use the free follow-up sessions when something slips, and with On-Leash Foundations, the lifetime phone and email support. The program does the teaching during the stay; the repetition at home is yours.
