Board & train

Board and train for Corgis

A Corgi was built to drive cattle by nipping at hooves and shouting about it, and a hallway with running children can look a lot like a herd. Many Corgis bark at the window, boss other dogs and treat a request as an opening offer. A live-in program gives those instincts rules and gives the household a way to hold them. This page is about program fit, not method: the Corgi training guide covers how.

What gets worked on

Teaching a cattle dog that the family is not livestock.

Heel-nipping is a common Corgi complaint, and management comes first: until the dog has a reliable place and a solid down, children do not run past it, and a gate or a leash held by an adult keeps the two apart. Inside the program, place and down-stay are taught around movement, because a Corgi lying still while something runs by is the exact skill the hallway needs. Leash manners work on walking past joggers and cyclists without a lunge at the ankles.

Puppy Fundamentals is built for puppies in their key learning window: crate comfort, name recognition, the basic positions and place, and calm around new sights and sounds, before the mouth-on-ankle habit has been rehearsed for a year. On-Leash Foundations is built for the dog who drags on the leash. Where nipping has broken skin, or bossiness has become guarding or snapping at the family, Behaviour Rehab starts with a full assessment and accepts bite histories after it. The consultation recommends which program fits.

Keeping it at home

The adults run the program at home; the kids just get to enjoy the dog.

At the handover lesson the adults learn the place and down-stay around movement and the leash work past joggers, with the dog performing for them. Children do not take part in training or in testing the dog; their job is to walk, not run, in the rooms where the Corgi is loose, and to leave the dog alone on its place. When the kids get loud, a grown-up sends the Corgi to its bed, every time.

Barking and bossiness get the same consistency: a covered window where the dog used to patrol, place before the door opens, and a request asked once, helped, marked and paid rather than debated. Bossiness with other dogs is handled by choosing who it meets: structured, on leash, not a free-for-all at the off-leash park. Free follow-up sessions are included. At the consultation we hear the real version and recommend the program that fits, including a smaller one when it is enough.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Does board and train help a Corgi that nips at children's heels?

It works on the skills that replace the nip: a place command and a down that hold while people move, and a leash habit that does not include ankles. Until then, management is the plan: an adult-held leash or a gate between the dog and running kids. If a nip has broken skin, tell us at the consultation; Behaviour Rehab starts with a full assessment.

Which Corgi board and train program fits?

Puppy Fundamentals is built for young dogs still learning crate comfort, place and calm around new sights and sounds, and On-Leash Foundations for dogs who bark and pull on the leash. Behaviour Rehab is built for barking that has become lunging, or bossiness that has become guarding or snapping, customized after a full assessment. The consultation makes the call.

What does a Corgi training program cover day to day?

Every board and train runs on daily one-on-one training inside a structured routine, with socialization, enrichment and updates to you, then a handover lesson and free follow-up sessions. For a Corgi the work leans on place and down-stay around movement, leash manners past joggers and cyclists, and settling instead of announcing everything that passes.

Will a board and train stop a Corgi barking?

Silence is not something anyone can promise from a breed built to shout at cattle. Place at the door and window and settling instead of announcing are part of the daily work, and the handover lesson teaches you to keep both going. For barking that comes with lunging at people or dogs, Behaviour Rehab is built for reactivity, after a full assessment.
