Board & train

Board and train for Border Collies

The Border Collie herds with its eyes. That low, frozen stare was bred to move sheep without a bite, and in a city it can land on cyclists, skateboards, the neighbour's kids and the shadow on the kitchen floor. A collie often absorbs a curriculum in a hurry, then invents a new job the moment the lesson ends. A live-in program has to plan for both halves of that.

Eye and motion

Teaching the skill is the easy part with this breed.

Many collies pick up sit, down and a tidy heel quickly, and that speed can be a trap: a dog that learns a command fast often learns the loophole just as fast. That is why real-world proofing matters so much here. A down-stay held while a bike passes. A recall off a jogger mid-stalk. A place command that outlasts a ball bouncing past. Functional Off-Leash, three weeks at $3,030 + GST, works on reliable recall around distractions and off-leash manners, Educator remote collar included.

Advanced Off-Leash, four weeks at $3,940 + GST, works on skills many collies enjoy using: sit, down and stay far from the handler, off-leash heel and public manners, with two follow-up sessions. Behaviour Rehab is built for anxiety, reactivity and aggression, planned after a full assessment, for a collie whose fixation has tipped into lunging at cyclists or snapping at people. Shadow or light chasing the dog cannot be called off is worth raising with your vet first.

A job that lasts

What comes home is a routine, and the collie will test it.

The handover lesson is where you inherit the routine your dog has lived inside: the same marker, the same heel position, the same release word. For a Border Collie the transfer matters as much as the training, because many collies read their handlers closely and notice quickly when the rules change. In the off-leash programs, owner education on the Educator collar is part of that hand-off, and free follow-up sessions are included for the questions that only show up at home.

Then the collie needs a job, and no program can send one home in a bag. A walk in heel is obedience, not work; work is a rule-bound game, a scent task, or distance commands in the yard, so the eye lands on you. Our Border Collie training guide covers method. Children and cyclists are never practice material. If the stalking returns or sharpens, have a professional look again. A program is recommended at the consultation, not before, and a smaller one when it is enough.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Is a Border Collie board and train worth it if my dog already knows the commands?

Knowing a command in the kitchen and holding it while a cyclist passes are different skills, and real-world proofing is built into the program for exactly that gap. Every board and train includes daily one-on-one training inside a structured routine. Whether that is what your collie needs is what the consultation is for.

Which Border Collie training program fits a dog that herds bikes and kids?

Functional Off-Leash is built for reliable recall around distractions and off-leash manners; Advanced Off-Leash adds off-leash heel and sit, down and stay at distance. If the herding has become lunging or nipping at people, Behaviour Rehab is built for reactivity and aggression after a full assessment. The consultation recommends which one fits.

Will board and train burn off my Border Collie's energy?

It gives the dog daily training, enrichment and a structured routine, but it is not an exercise service and the energy comes home with the dog. What the program works on is putting that energy into a heel, a stay or a recall when asked. The job after the program is yours to supply.

Does board and train for a Border Collie help with obsessive ball or shadow chasing?

Working around a moving ball is part of distraction training, and the handover lesson shows you how to use the ball as a reward with rules. Shadow or light chasing is a different matter and starts with your vet, not with us. Neither should be punished.

Put the eye to work.

Bring the stare, the stalk and the ball. Book a consultation and we will tell you which program fits, honestly.
