Board & train

Board and train for Australian Shepherds

An Australian Shepherd often picks a person. That person gets a shadow, a head on the knee and a dog who glances up to check they are still there; everyone else gets a stare from the hallway. Add a herding drive that wants the household gathered in one room, and you have a loyal, suspicious, busy dog. The question for a live-in program is what happens when the person is not in the room.

One person, many strangers

Being handled by someone new is half the curriculum.

Many Aussies are polite with their person and stiff with everyone else, and a live-in program puts the dog in the hands of someone who is not their person. That is deliberate. Structured socialization is part of every board and train, with heel and place as the job while a stranger walks past. For a pup, Puppy Fundamentals, three weeks at $2,775 + GST, lists socialization and new sights and sounds, calmly.

For the Aussie who drags toward or away from people, On-Leash Foundations, two weeks at $1,865 + GST, works on loose-leash walking, heel and place around everyday distractions, with lifetime phone and email support. Functional Off-Leash adds recall around distractions for the dog ready for the river path. When wariness has turned into barking, lunging or a freeze at visitors, Behaviour Rehab is built for it: a full assessment first, then reactivity work and confidence building.

The whole household

The dog bonded to you has to learn the rest of the family.

The leverage you bring home is a dog who has held heel, place and a stay for someone other than you. The handover lesson teaches you the cues and tools; then you hand them around: a partner who walks the dog in heel, another adult who sends it to place at dinner. Many Aussies work for their person and blow off everyone else, so the owner's role is to make sure the rules do not depend on who holds the leash.

Keep managing the wariness. Visitors are not asked to pet the dog, the dog is never lured toward anyone, and a growl at the door is information to act on, not something to punish. The how is in our Australian Shepherd training guide. Stranger barking may temporarily increase as home routines shift; if it persists or escalates, book a professional reassessment. At the consultation we recommend the program, and the smaller one when that is all your Aussie needs.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Is board and train hard on an Australian Shepherd that is attached to one person?

Many attached dogs find time away from their person unsettling, and the structured routine, daily one-on-one work and enrichment are there to give them something steady to lean on. Visits are gently discouraged because they interrupt that routine, so updates come by social media and personal phone or email check-ins. If your dog already panics when left alone at home, say so at the consultation, because separation distress changes the plan.

Which Australian Shepherd training program fits a dog that barks at strangers?

If the barking comes with excitement and poor leash manners, On-Leash Foundations works on heel, place and everyday distractions. If it comes with lunging, a stiff body or a bite history, Behaviour Rehab is built for anxiety, reactivity and aggression, starting with a full assessment and running 5 to 6 weeks at $4,850 to $5,760 + GST. The consultation recommends the program.

Does an Australian Shepherd board and train deal with herding the kids?

Herding people is worked on through heel, place and distraction training, so the dog has a sanctioned job while children move around. Children never take part in the training or the testing; adults run the exercises and the dog is secured when kids are playing. A sudden change in a dog that used to be easy with the kids deserves a vet visit before anything else.

What does board and train for an Australian Shepherd cost?

It depends on the program: On-Leash Foundations is $1,865 + GST for two weeks, Functional Off-Leash $3,030 + GST for three, Advanced Off-Leash $3,940 + GST for four, and Behaviour Rehab $4,850 to $5,760 + GST for 5 to 6 weeks after assessment. Puppy Fundamentals is $2,775 + GST for three weeks. We make the program recommendation at the consultation, including a smaller option when it does the job.
