Why dogs do it

Why does my dog bark at nothing?

From your side of the room, there is nothing there. From your dog's, there may be a truck a few streets over or a cat crossing the yard downwind. Not every bark has a hidden source, though. Some barking is a habit with a hair trigger, and some is a request aimed squarely at you. Telling those apart is the first step toward a quieter house.

What your dog notices

Hidden sounds, alert habits and bids for attention.

Dogs hear higher pitches and fainter sounds than we do, and their noses pick up traffic we never notice. A bark aimed at a wall, a vent or a dark window often lines up with something real: a neighbour's door, a furnace ticking, wildlife moving outside after dark. Clues include ears pricked toward one spot, a still, braced body, and barking that stops when the sound or scent fades.

Alert barking often starts with a real sound and then grows into a habit, firing at smaller and smaller cues. Attention barking looks different: the dog faces you, not the wall, often after a pause in play or when you sit down to work. It tends to stop the moment you look up or speak. Note where your dog looks, when the barking happens and what follows it.

  • Ears fixed on one spot
  • Faces you, not the wall
  • Starts at predictable times
  • Stops when you respond

Vet or training

Signs to check first, then where training fits.

Some barking at nothing is a vet matter. Call your vet if it is new in a senior dog, comes with confusion, pacing or night waking, or appears alongside changes in hearing, vision or appetite. Those patterns can have physical causes no trainer should guess at. For a healthy dog, first steps are management: block the sight lines that spark barking, keep evenings calmer, and keep a simple log. Our how-to guide covers the quieting method.

If attention seeking or a loose routine is driving it, Private Training gives you an hour with us and a written plan to practice all week. Day Training adds weekday manners work and a weekly one-hour go-home lesson. Behaviour Rehab is built for anxiety, reactivity and aggression, after a full assessment. Since this barking can be a sound, a habit or a request, the consultation first sorts out which, then recommends a program, smaller when that is enough.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Why does my dog bark at nothing at night?

Nights are quiet for us but full of sound and scent for a dog, including wildlife and settling house noises. A dog who barks at night with confusion or restlessness, especially an older one, should see a vet.

Can dogs hear things humans can't?

Yes. Dogs detect higher-pitched and fainter sounds than people do, so a bark at an apparently silent room may be a response to something real.

Is my dog barking at ghosts?

More likely the fridge, a neighbour or a mouse in the wall. Watch where the ears point and when it happens, and the pattern will tell you more than any theory.

Should I ignore my dog barking at nothing?

If the bark is aimed at you for attention, not rewarding it with a reaction can help. Never ignore signs of distress or a need to go outside, and if you cannot tell which it is, a professional can help you read it.

Work out what the bark means.

Book a consultation and we will help you read the barking and choose a format that fits your home.
