Board and train

What board and train cannot do

A live-in program has clear edges, and we would rather draw them before anyone books than explain them afterward. This page sets out what a board and train does not do, what stays with the owner, and where a vet belongs in the picture. It also lists what each program is built to work on, so the edges sit next to the substance rather than replacing it.

The honest limits

Where a live-in program runs out of reach.

It cannot promise a result, and we do not. It cannot learn on the owner's behalf: sessions with the dog alone do not replace the owner's own learning, which is why every board and train ends with a handover lesson and continues with free follow-up sessions. It cannot carry skills into a home by itself, either. What the dog practised inside a structured routine has to be practised at home too, and that part is the owner's, with our support behind it.

It cannot stand in for a vet. We suggest asking a vet about any new or unexplained change in behaviour, or pain, before a program is chosen, because training is not a medical check. It cannot set a social goal for a dog it has not met. Whether the aim for a particular dog is ignoring strangers, walking past other dogs, or something else is part of the consultation, and we do not promise or rule out change before meeting the dog.

What it can do

What each program is built to work on.

Puppy Fundamentals, three weeks at $2,775 plus GST, works on crate comfort, leash manners, name recognition, sit, down, place and socialization. On-Leash Foundations, two weeks at $1,865 plus GST, works on loose-leash walking, heel, sit, down, stay and place around everyday distractions. Functional and Advanced Off-Leash work on recall and manners around distractions, with the remote collar included and its use taught. Behaviour Rehab, five to six weeks, is built for anxiety, reactivity and aggression, planned and priced after a full assessment.

Each runs one-on-one inside a structured routine with socialization and enrichment, plus updates to you while the dog is away, a handover lesson at the end and free follow-up sessions after it. The consultation is where we recommend a program, and we recommend a smaller one when it is enough. Useful questions to bring: what the program would work on for this dog, what would still be yours to manage at home, and what the handover lesson and follow-ups would cover.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

What can't board and train do?

It cannot promise a result, cannot replace the owner's own learning and home practice, and cannot stand in for a vet when a behaviour might have a medical cause. It also cannot set a goal for a dog before meeting it. What it does is work on published skills inside a structured routine and hand them over through a lesson and free follow-up sessions.

What are the real limits of board and train for a fearful dog?

We cannot promise how a particular fearful dog will feel about strangers or other dogs afterward, and we would not rule anything out before meeting the dog. Behaviour Rehab is built for anxiety, reactivity and aggression, and works on fear-based behaviour and confidence building after a full assessment. The in-depth owner education is part of it, so the work at home has a why behind it.

What are realistic board and train expectations for the first month home?

We do not publish a month-by-month forecast, because no two dogs, or households, are alike. What we can say is what is included: a handover lesson at the end of the program and free follow-up sessions after it, for the questions that come up at home. We suggest asking at the consultation how those are arranged.

Will a board and train fix a dog if nothing at home can change?

We cannot promise a result in any home, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. The program works on skills inside a structured routine, and keeping them going at home is the owner's part, with the handover lesson and follow-ups behind it. If the household's routine has limits, we suggest saying so at the consultation, so the recommendation takes them into account.
