Dog training for hunters and upland walkers: what we do and do not

People bring us pointers, retrievers and spaniels and ask whether we can make them hunt. We cannot, and we say so at the first call. What we can do is build the plain obedience that field work sits on, the part that often goes missing when a dog has a brilliant nose and a vague recall. Here is the honest line between what we train and what belongs to a field trainer.

Honest scope

We build the obedience, not the bird work.

Field work is a craft of its own: steadiness to wing and shot, marked and blind retrieves, whistle handling, bird introduction, delivery to hand. We do not teach any of it, and we will not pretend otherwise. If you want a finished gun dog, you need a field trainer, and nothing on this page replaces one. What we train is the layer a field trainer often appreciates finding already in place.

That layer is plainer than it sounds. A recall that outranks a fresh scent trail. A sit or down that holds at distance while something exciting happens, which is what a steady stop is before anyone adds a bird. An off-leash heel from the field edge back to the truck. A settle that lasts in a blind or at a tailgate, built from the place command and extended around real distractions. Upland walkers who never fire a shot want the same four things.

  • No gun dog or field training
  • Recall that outranks fresh scent
  • Sit or down held at distance
  • Off-leash heel to the truck

Where our programs sit next to the field work.

Functional Off-Leash is the three-week board and train at $3,030 + GST, built for dogs with decent manners ready to earn real freedom. It works on reliable recall around distractions and distraction training, and includes the Micro or Mini Educator remote collar with owner education. Advanced Off-Leash, four weeks at $3,940 + GST, adds off-leash heel, sit, stay and down at distance, and public manners. If your field trainer also uses a remote collar, tell us, so the conditioning does not conflict.

The fit works in either direction and we will not prescribe an order for every dog. You might want the recall and stop in place before a first field season, or come to us after one because the dog hunts well and comes back badly. Bring your field trainer's cue words and whistle commands to the consultation so what we build does not fight them. The consultation is where we recommend a program, and a leaner one gets recommended whenever it covers the job.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Do you offer hunting dog obedience training in Calgary?

We offer the obedience, not the hunting. Northline K9 builds recall around distractions, sit and down at distance, off-leash heel and public manners through one-on-one board and train programs in Calgary, and leaves field work to a field trainer. If that layer is what your dog is missing, it is exactly what we do.

What is gun dog obedience, and is it different from field training?

Gun dog obedience is the ordinary control a working dog needs before the bird work: coming when called, holding a sit or down, heeling, settling. Field training adds the specialised skills, steadiness to shot, retrieving, handling. We train the first and not the second, and the two are easiest to tell apart by asking whether a bird is involved.

Can you help with bird dog recall training?

Yes, as long as you know what we mean by it. We build a recall around escalating distractions, including scent, using markers and rewards first and a properly introduced remote collar, and we teach you to use every tool. We do not proof the recall off live birds; that proofing belongs with the field work.

Should my dog do obedience before or after field training?

We will not give one answer for every dog, and we would be wary of anyone who does. Ask your field trainer what they want a dog to arrive with, then tell us at the consultation, along with the cues they use. We recommend a program from there, and a smaller one when that is enough.

Obedience under the nose

Bring your field trainer's cues to the consultation and we will build the recall, stop and heel beneath them. Book a consultation.
