Choosing a trainer
Does e-collar training work?
Ask ten dog owners about e-collars and you will hear ten strong opinions. The useful question is narrower: works for what, on which dog, introduced how, and in whose hands. Answer those four and the tool either makes sense for your dog or it does not. Here is how we decide, and where we think the limits sit.

How we use it
The collar comes after the dog understands the cue.
We teach skills with markers and rewards first. A dog who does not yet know what come means gains nothing from a remote collar except confusion. Once the recall, the sit and the place are understood, the collar becomes a way to reach the dog at a distance, near a squirrel or across a field, where a leash cannot. Tools are matched to the individual dog, and an e-collar is one option alongside slip leads and prong collars.
Introduction matters as much as the tool itself. We introduce the collar properly and then teach the owner to use it, because a remote in untrained hands is just a button. Functional Off-Leash, at $3,030 plus GST, includes a Micro or Mini Educator remote collar and owner education on every tool. Advanced Off-Leash, at $3,940 plus GST, includes a remote collar, owner education and a handover lesson.
- Cues taught with rewards first
- Collar fitted and introduced properly
- Owner taught to use the remote
- Proofed around real distractions
The honest limits
Some dogs and some owners should skip it.
An e-collar explains nothing to a frightened dog. For anxiety, fear-based behaviour, reactivity or aggression, the first step is understanding why the dog reacts, not adding a sensation to the moment it happens. Our Behaviour Rehab starts with a full assessment, and tools are chosen after that, if at all. If a behaviour seems sudden or out of character, ask your vet before starting any training plan.
It is also the wrong pick for an owner who wants a quick fix without practice. The collar works only as well as the timing and consistency behind it, and that takes learning. Some dogs simply do not need one: On-Leash Foundations is built for dogs who drag and lunge, and it sends a slip lead home. In the consultation we will say so plainly when a simpler tool or a smaller program is enough.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Is e-collar training cruel?
Any tool can be misused, which is why introduction and owner education matter so much. We teach with markers and rewards first and introduce the collar properly, matched to the individual dog.
Can an e-collar fix a reactive dog?
We do not treat it as a fix for reactivity. Reactive, anxious or aggressive dogs need a full assessment first, and the plan is built around why the dog reacts.
Does the e-collar come home with my dog?
Functional Off-Leash includes a Micro or Mini Educator remote collar, and Advanced Off-Leash includes a remote collar. Both include owner education so you know how and when to use it.
Should I buy an e-collar and train my dog myself?
If you want to try, start with a professional showing you the introduction and the timing. A Private Training session is $150 plus GST and comes with a written plan you can practise all week.
