Board and train
Does board and train help with fear and anxiety?
Fear is the one problem where the answer to this question has to start with an assessment rather than a price. A live-in program gives an anxious dog a structured routine and daily one-on-one work, and Behaviour Rehab is built for the hiders, the barkers and the growlers. It also has limits, and pretending otherwise would not help you or the dog. This page covers both.

What Rehab covers
Planned after the assessment, not before.
Behaviour Rehab is the program we build for anxiety, reactivity and aggression. It runs five to six weeks at $4,850 to $5,760 plus GST, and both the plan and the price are set after a full behaviour assessment rather than from a phone description. The published work covers anxiety rehabilitation, fear-based behaviour, confidence building and structured socialization, delivered as daily individualized training inside a structured routine, with updates to you along the way. Dogs with bite histories are accepted after that same assessment.
The assessment is about your dog rather than a category. What the dog is afraid of, how the fear shows (hiding, freezing, barking, growling) and how the dog copes away from you all feed into whether a live-in program is a reasonable fit or whether something smaller would serve better. Which program fits is recommended at the consultation, including a smaller one when it is enough. Private Training, at $150 plus GST per one-hour session, is one of the options on the table.
- Anxiety and fear-based behaviour work
- Confidence building and structured socialization
- Full assessment before a plan
- Bite histories assessed first
Honest limits
What training cannot promise a fearful dog.
We cannot promise that a fearful dog will come home unafraid, and we will not say so to win a booking. Fear can have many contributors, and some of them are not training questions at all. If your dog's behaviour changed suddenly, or the fear comes with signs of pain or illness, we suggest asking your vet first, before you book anything with us. A vet check is not a hoop to jump through; it is information that makes any training plan more honest.
The second limit is transfer. Whatever the dog learns with us has to survive your house, your street and your schedule, which is why Behaviour Rehab includes in-depth owner education, a handover lesson and two free follow-up sessions. Some fear is managed over the long term rather than resolved, and we would rather you hear that from us early. Questions worth bringing to the consultation: how your dog copes with being away from you, what settles it, and what sets it off.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Is board and train good for an anxious dog?
It can be, and a full assessment is how we find out for a particular dog. Behaviour Rehab is built for anxiety, reactivity and aggression, with five to six weeks of daily individualized work and in-depth owner education. We would not book it from a phone call alone.
Is board and train for a fearful dog different from regular obedience training?
The published programs differ in what they work on. The on-leash and off-leash programs work on obedience skills around distractions, while Behaviour Rehab works on anxiety rehabilitation, fear-based behaviour and confidence building, and it is planned after a full assessment. Neither is a substitute for the other, and the assessment settles which applies to your dog.
Does board and train help nervous dogs, or does leaving home make it worse?
We cannot answer that for a dog we have not assessed, and the answer differs from dog to dog. How your dog copes when separated from you is one of the things the assessment weighs. Private Training at $150 plus GST per one-hour session, with a written weekly plan customized to your home, is one alternative for owners who want to do the work themselves.
What does the owner have to do after board and train for anxiety?
Carry the work on, with our help. Behaviour Rehab includes in-depth owner education so you learn the why as well as the what, plus a handover lesson and two free follow-up sessions. The dog comes home to your routine, so that is where the work continues.
