Board and train

Does board and train help with crate training?

Whether a board and train covers crate training depends on which program you mean. Puppy Fundamentals lists crate comfort on its curriculum; our adult programs do not. So this page is mostly about puppies: what the three weeks work on, what comes home in the welcome package and at the handover lesson, and why the crate in your hallway is still a new crate to a puppy who learned somewhere else.

On the curriculum

Crate comfort sits on the puppy curriculum, not the adult ones.

Puppy Fundamentals is a three-week board and train at $2,775 + GST, built for puppies in their key learning window. Crate comfort is on the curriculum alongside leash manners, name recognition, sit and down with stay, a place command, structured socialization and meeting new sights and sounds calmly. The puppy gets daily one-on-one training inside a structured routine, with enrichment and updates to you along the way. Comfort is the word on purpose: the aim is settling, not tolerating.

Before the program starts, the welcome package includes a crate-training guide, so the introduction can begin at home in your own crate. The handover lesson is where you learn what the puppy has been practising, and one free follow-up session within 60 days covers the questions that show up once you are living with it. For adult dogs, crate comfort is not a listed skill in our other programs, so if the crate is your main concern, raise it at the consultation.

Home is different

Why we do not promise the comfort travels unchanged.

A board and train cannot change your hallway. The crate at home sits in a different room, with different sounds, a different family and a different bedtime, and a puppy who was comfortable in a crate elsewhere may treat yours as a new question. That is not a failure of the training or of you; it is what a change of scenery can do to a young dog. The handover lesson and the follow-up session are there for exactly this.

If a puppy whines in the crate at home, check the plain things first: whether it needs to go out, and whether it is too warm, too cold or hungry. We do not hand out a blanket rule to wait it out, because whining is not one thing. Drooling, frantic escape attempts or self-injury are a question for your vet first. Behaviour Rehab is built for anxiety, reactivity and aggression, and both the plan and the price follow a full assessment.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Does board and train help with crate training?

For puppies, yes: crate comfort is a listed skill in Puppy Fundamentals, our three-week board and train at $2,775 + GST, and the welcome package includes a crate-training guide. It is not a listed skill in our adult programs. The handover lesson and the free follow-up session are where we help you work on it in your own home.

How does board and train handle crate training for an adult dog?

Crate comfort is not on the curriculum of On-Leash Foundations, Functional Off-Leash or Advanced Off-Leash, so we would not sell you those programs as crate training. If an adult dog's crate is the main worry, tell us at the consultation and we will say what, if anything, fits. Private Training at $150 + GST per one-hour session comes with a written weekly plan customized to your home.

Can board and train help with crate anxiety?

We do not diagnose anxiety from a crate story, and neither should a web page. If your dog drools, panics or hurts itself in a crate, ask your vet first. Behaviour Rehab is built for anxiety, reactivity and aggression, with pricing set after a full assessment.

Is it better to crate train before board and train starts?

Starting is fine, and the welcome package includes a crate-training guide for that reason. A puppy who has already met a crate calmly has a familiar object waiting at home afterward, which is the part a board and train cannot supply. The guide is the place to start, and the consultation is the place for questions it does not answer.

Crate questions, answered honestly.

Book a consultation. Tell us your puppy's age and how the crate is going, and we will recommend honestly, including nothing at all.
