Board and train
Does board and train help an adolescent dog?
Often it can, if help is defined carefully. Adolescence is the stretch after puppyhood when many owners notice the puppy has developed opinions: the recall gets selective and the leash gets tight. What a board and train offers at that age is what it offers at any age: daily one-on-one training, a structured routine, a handover lesson and follow-up sessions. What it does not offer is a shortcut through a developmental stage.

What adolescence changes
Same programs, different reasons for booking them.
The curriculum does not change for a teenager; the reason for booking often does. Adolescence is when, for many dogs, a leash becomes a tug of war, a recall becomes optional and a sit becomes a negotiation. On-Leash Foundations, two weeks at $1,865 + GST, is built for dogs who treat the leash as a suggestion. Functional Off-Leash, three weeks at $3,030 + GST, is built for a dog with decent manners who is ready for the river path, the off-leash park or the campsite.
One more program deserves a mention. Puppy Fundamentals is a three-week board and train at $2,775 + GST, built for puppies in their key learning window, and it works on crate comfort, name recognition, leash manners, sit, down, place and socialization. Where puppyhood ends and adolescence begins varies from dog to dog, and no birthday settles it. On that line, the consultation looks at the dog rather than the calendar, and the smaller program is the recommendation when it is enough.

Before you book
Three questions worth asking about a teenage dog.
First: is this new, or just bigger? A pull that has grown with the dog is a training question; a sudden change, especially with pain or fear, is one for your vet first. Second: what should the dog be able to do in six months, walk beside you on leash or come back at the campsite? The two programs are built for different answers. Third: who holds the leash at home, and will everyone hold it the same way?
The third question matters because the handover lesson is where the work becomes yours. Every board and train includes a handover lesson and free follow-up sessions, and On-Leash Foundations adds lifetime phone and email support. We do not predict how a teenage dog behaves in its first days home, because dogs vary and predictions have a way of turning into promises. What we can say is that the skills, tools and cues are taught to you at the handover.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Is board and train good for an adolescent dog?
It can be, depending on what you want the dog to learn, and we do not promise to resolve teenage behaviour. The published programs work on leash skills, recall and manners with daily one-on-one training and a structured routine, and each ends with a handover lesson so the work continues with you.
Which board and train is best for a teenage dog?
There is no single answer, because teenage dogs arrive with different goals. On-Leash Foundations, two weeks at $1,865 + GST, is built for leash skills around everyday distractions; Functional Off-Leash, three weeks at $3,030 + GST, is built for recall around distractions with an Educator remote collar included. The consultation is where one is recommended, and the smaller one wins when it is enough.
Does board and train help a 1 year old dog?
It can. The two-week and three-week programs are organized around goals such as leash manners and recall rather than around an age, so a one-year-old is looked at on what it does and what you need, not on its birthday. That conversation happens at the consultation.
Is it too late to send a teenage dog to board and train?
No. The published programs describe what they work on and who they are built for, not a cut-off age. Older dogs are looked at the same way: by what the dog does now and what you would like it to do.
