Choosing a trainer

Can two unneutered dogs live together?

Plenty of homes have two intact dogs, sometimes on purpose, sometimes because a vet advised waiting. It can work. It also asks more of you: reading both dogs, controlling resources, and planning for heat cycles if one is female. Here is what tends to raise the stakes, what management looks like day to day, and when to call in help.

Management comes first

Set up the house before tension shows up.

Start with space. Feed the dogs apart, pick up high-value chews and toys when you are not supervising, and give each dog a crate or a gated room of its own. Watch the doorways and tight hallways where two dogs meet head-on. When you leave the house, separate them. None of this means the dogs dislike each other. It means you are removing the moments that tend to spark trouble.

If you have an intact male and a female, a heat cycle changes everything. Unless you are planning a litter with your vet's guidance, the two need complete separation for the whole cycle, with no exceptions for a quick hello. Two intact males may posture more around each other, and two females can clash too. Pairs differ, so watch your own dogs rather than a rule.

  • Separate feeding at every meal
  • Chews and toys picked up
  • A crate or gated room each
  • Full separation during heat

Vet, then training

Hormones are a vet question, and manners are ours.

Whether and when to neuter is a conversation for your vet, who knows your dogs' ages, breeds and health. We do not give medical advice on it. What training can work on is a reliable place command for each dog, a solid recall, and the habit of settling while the other dog moves around. Those skills give you a way to interrupt a stare before it turns into a scuffle.

If there has been a fight, a bite, or one dog now avoids the other, stop managing alone and get a professional assessment. Never punish growling between them, since it is a warning. Our Behaviour Rehab is built for aggression and reactivity and starts with a full assessment, priced at $4,850 to $5,760 plus GST. For calmer pairs, Private Training at $150 plus GST per session works on a written plan for your household.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Can two intact male dogs live together?

Some can, with careful management and supervision, though two intact males may posture more around resources and each other. Watch for stiffening, staring and blocking, and get an assessment if tension is growing.

Should I neuter one of my dogs to stop fighting?

That is a question for your vet, who can weigh age, health and timing. Fighting also needs a behaviour plan and safe separation in the meantime, whatever you decide.

How do I keep my dogs apart when my female is in heat?

Use full separation: different rooms or crates, sturdy gates, and separate toilet trips on leash. Do not rely on supervision alone during a heat cycle.

Do two unspayed female dogs get along?

Many do and some do not, so it depends on the individual dogs more than a rule. If you see guarding, hard stares or scuffles, separate them and ask for an assessment before it escalates.
