Day training

Can a reactive dog do day training?

Reactive covers a lot of ground, from a young dog who barks at other dogs to a dog who has bitten, and the word alone does not tell anyone which program fits. Rather than rule a dog in or out from a web page, this one lays out what Day Training and Behaviour Rehab each include, what is worth writing down before you talk to us, and the safety steps we suggest taking today.

Safety today

Management comes before any program decision.

If your dog has lunged, snapped or bitten, we suggest the first job is preventing the next incident, and it does not wait for a consultation. That means a leash held by an adult on every walk, distance from whatever sets your dog off, no dog parks, and no testing to see what happens. We also suggest not punishing a growl; it is the warning you want to keep. Children should be kept separate from a dog that has snapped or bitten.

Management is not training, and it is not a verdict on your dog. It is the floor a program stands on while the decision gets made properly. If the reactivity is new or sudden, or came with a change in appetite, movement or sleep, we suggest a vet visit too, so pain or illness can be ruled out. If a person has been bitten, medical care for them comes first, then a call to us or another professional for an assessment.

  • Distance from triggers, no dog parks
  • Never punish the growl
  • Write down what you have seen

Before the consultation

Two programs, and the notes that help us recommend one.

Day Training is a weekday program at $650 + GST per week: one-on-one daily training, structured socialization, supervised play and enrichment, drop-off 8 to 10 am, pick-up 5 to 7 pm, and a weekly one-hour go-home lesson. Behaviour Rehab is built for anxiety, reactivity and aggression: a five to six week board and train, priced at $4,850 to $5,760 + GST after a full assessment, with two follow-up sessions and in-depth owner education. Dogs with bite histories are accepted into it after that assessment.

Before the consultation, it helps to write down what you have seen: what sets your dog off and how far away it was, what your dog did (stiffen, bark, lunge, or try to leave), whether there has ever been contact with teeth, and how long settling took. Do not remove the leash or provoke a reaction to gather any of this. We work from what has already happened, and at the consultation we recommend a program, including a smaller one when it is enough.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Can a reactive dog do day training?

Possibly, and the consultation is where we find out. Day Training is a weekday program of one-on-one training, structured socialization and enrichment; Behaviour Rehab is the program built for anxiety, reactivity and aggression, planned after a full assessment. We recommend the program that fits, including a smaller one when it is enough.

Is day training safe for a reactive dog?

Everything at Northline K9 is one-on-one, with no group classes, so no dog is dropped into a group. Which program fits your dog is a consultation decision, and the safety steps you take now, leash on, distance from triggers, no testing, matter whatever we recommend.

Is there a day school for a reactive dog in Calgary?

Our Day Training is a weekday one-on-one program, Monday to Friday at $650 + GST per week, and whether it suits a particular reactive dog is decided at the consultation rather than on a web page. Behaviour Rehab is the program built for reactivity, anxiety and aggression, shaped by a full assessment.

What if my dog is only reactive on leash?

Write down what you have seen: the trigger, the distance, what your dog did and how long it took to settle. Do not take the leash off or set up a reaction to learn more. Those existing observations are enough for us to recommend a program at the consultation.

Tell us what you have seen

Bring your notes: the trigger, the distance, whether there has been contact. We will recommend a program from there. Book a consultation.
