Are Whippets easy to train?
Whippets are built for a short, explosive sprint and a long nap afterward. Many are affectionate, sensitive and a little reserved, which shapes how training should feel. A raised voice can shut a whippet down for the afternoon, while a flicker in the grass can switch one on instantly. Both answers, easy and hard, come from that same wiring.

Soft dogs, light hands
Why a sensitive sighthound needs a gentle touch.
Many whippets are thin-skinned in both senses. Harsh corrections or a frustrated tone often make them freeze or disengage, so we build skills with markers and food first and keep the mood light. They tend to pick up sit, down and place quickly, and a whippet who enjoys the work will often offer behaviours eagerly.
Calgary winters are worth planning around. A short, fine coat means many whippets dislike long cold sessions, so a warm jacket and brief outdoor reps help keep the focus on learning rather than shivering. Any tool, including a slip lead, is matched to the individual dog and introduced slowly. Questions about skin, weight or cold tolerance are best taken to your vet.
- Quiet, well-timed markers
- Short reps before the zoomies
- Warm coat for winter walks
- Leash on near open fields
Recall and realism
Chase instinct sets the ceiling on off-leash freedom.
Sighthounds were bred to chase what moves, and many whippets reach full speed before they have processed a recall cue. That is not disobedience. It means off-leash time near roads, open fields or wildlife is a serious judgment call, not a test of training. A long line in a safe space is a useful middle ground while recall is built.
Functional Off-Leash ($3,030 + GST, three weeks) works on recall around distractions, with an Educator remote collar included and owner education on using it properly. Even so, we will be honest at the consultation about whether off-leash goals fit your particular whippet. On-Leash Foundations or Private Training may suit better, and we recommend the smaller option when it does the job.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Are whippets easy to train?
For house manners and basic obedience, often yes. Many are sensitive, eager and quick to learn with gentle, reward-based training. Recall around moving prey is the notable exception.
Are whippets hard to train?
They can be hard in one specific area: recall when something runs. Many whippets react to motion faster than to a cue, so off-leash freedom needs careful judgment. Harsh handling also tends to make them shut down.
Whippets training: what comes first?
Start with name recognition, a calm leash walk and a place command, taught with food and a soft voice. Add recall practice on a long line in a secure area. Keep outdoor sessions short in cold weather.
Can a whippet ever be trusted off leash?
Some whippets develop solid recall in controlled settings, but the chase instinct does not disappear. Whether and where to allow off-leash time depends on the individual dog, the location and local rules. We talk that through honestly at the consultation.
