Breed trainability

Are Siberian Huskys hard to train?

Siberian Huskies were developed to pull a sled in a team, with the driver's voice as the only steering. That heritage does not tell us what a particular husky will do at the door or the end of a leash, but it explains why we plan husky training around three jobs: walking without pulling, coming back when called, and staying inside the boundary. Hard to train in specific ways, then, not across the board.

Built to pull

Loose-leash walking is a brand-new skill for a sled dog.

Pulling is the first of the three jobs, because for many huskies it is a default rather than a bad habit. A dog bred to lean into a harness and keep going is not doing anything wrong when it leans into a flat collar; it is doing what generations of selection asked for. So we teach loose-leash walking as a new skill, with markers and rewards first, and we match any tool to the individual dog after meeting it, never to the breed.

The second job is containment. Many huskies dig under, climb over or squeeze through boundaries that hold other dogs, so we would inspect a fence before relying on it, and we would still keep a fenced yard supervised. A fence limits where a dog can go; it does not make a missed recall harmless. Howling and talking are common in the breed, and we do not treat them as evidence of stubbornness or independence. We look at the trigger and the daily routine instead.

  • Pulling taught as a new skill
  • Fence inspected before trusted
  • Howling assessed, not labelled
  • Recall practised on a long line

Coming back

Recall is practised inside boundaries, never assumed on open ground.

The third job is recall, and this is where we choose our words carefully. Calgary's pathways and river valleys have their share of wildlife, and a husky that has locked onto a rabbit may not register a cue. We practise recall on a long line inside a secure space, and the leash stays on outside designated off-leash areas because Calgary's bylaw requires it. We do not promise any husky a recall that holds against wildlife, and we would be wary of anyone who does.

On-Leash Foundations runs two weeks as a board and train, $1,865 plus GST, and works on loose-leash walking, heel, place and everyday distractions. Functional Off-Leash runs three weeks as a board and train, $3,030 plus GST, and works on recall around distractions and off-leash house manners; a Micro or Mini Educator remote collar is part of the package. We state the collar as an inclusion, not as proof that the program or the tool suits a particular husky. Fit is a consultation question.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Are huskies easy to train?

Easy is not the word we would use, but the difficulty is specific rather than general. In our experience many huskies learn household manners and basic cues readily. Loose-leash walking, recall and staying inside a boundary take longer, because each one works against something the breed was selected for.

Are huskies stubborn?

Stubborn suggests a dog refusing on principle, and that is not how we would describe it. What we tend to see is a strong pull toward movement and scent, and a cue that has not yet been practised against those. We rebuild the cue with less distraction and more reward before asking for it on the trail.

Can huskies be off leash?

In Calgary that means designated off-leash areas, since the bylaw requires a leash elsewhere, and even there we would want a recall proofed on a long line first. Functional Off-Leash comes with a Micro or Mini Educator remote collar, which is a package fact rather than a forecast for any particular husky. A fenced area limits the range; it does not make a failed recall safe, and other dogs are inside it too.

Are huskies good for first time owners?

That depends more on the household than on the breed label. A first owner who is out most days, has secure containment and is patient with a long recall timeline is better placed than one hoping for a dog that walks quietly at heel from week one. We would rather talk that through at a consultation than guess from the breed.

Why does my husky howl so much?

Many huskies are vocal, and a howl can be a response to a siren, another dog, boredom or being left alone. We would look for the trigger and at what the dog does with its day before calling it a breed quirk. If the howling is new or sudden, we would rule out pain with a vet first.
