How to train a Husky
Huskies were bred to run far, decide fast, and argue about it afterwards. That independence is not disobedience; it is the job description. Living well with one means trading freedom for reliability, one long-line session at a time. Here is what the breed is really like at home, and the training approach that works with a husky instead of against it.

An athlete with its own agenda.
A husky is an escape artist first and a pet second. They test fences the way accountants test spreadsheets: methodically, and until something gives. Add a full vocal register, from theatrical howls to backtalk when dinner runs late, and you have a housemate with opinions. None of this is bad behaviour. It is a sled dog reading from the original script.
The recall problem is breed-famous for a reason. A husky at full stride is doing the thing it was built for, and your voice is competing with generations of selective breeding. Then there is the winter energy surplus: while other breeds hibernate, a husky in January is just warming up. Under-exercised, that surplus gets spent on your drywall, your garden, or the neighbourhood at large.

Training that works
Freedom is a wage, not a gift.
We start where the breed is: markers and rewards, high-value pay, and a long line as the contract. Recall gets trained like it matters, first in quiet spaces, then around dogs, smells and squirrels, and a modern Educator e-collar, introduced properly, gives a husky freedom it could never safely have on voice alone. Loose-leash walking comes early too, because a husky that pulls is cardio you did not sign up for.
The common owner mistake is letting a young husky off leash because it came back twice at the park. Calgary is the climate this breed was built for, which cuts both ways: a bored husky in January is a demolition crew with snow tires. Exercise alone will not fix that; structure has to come with it. Are huskies easy to train?
Not in the eager-to-please sense, no. A husky asks what is in it for them, and honest training answers that question with good pay and clear rules. They are highly trainable; they are simply never on autopilot.
How do I stop husky behaviour problems like escaping and howling?
Both are symptoms of surplus: energy and intelligence without an outlet. Daily structured work, real exercise and supervised yard time shrink the motive, while training gives the dog something better to do. Punishing the howl without draining the tank changes nothing.
When should husky puppy training start?
Immediately, and with a long line in the picture from the start. A husky puppy that never rehearses running off is far ahead of one that learned freedom is self-serve. Crate comfort and calm socialization round out the early work.
What are your top husky training tips?
Pay recall like it is the most important behaviour your dog knows, because it is. Keep the long line on for months longer than feels necessary. And schedule the exercise before the training session, not instead of it.
