Are Cavapoos easy to train?
Cavapoos are often described as lap dogs with a little extra spark, and that is a fair start. Their softness makes lessons pleasant but also means confidence can be bruised by a rough day. This page looks at how gentle structure works for a sensitive, social dog, what to do about separation distress, and which of our one-on-one formats suit the breed.

Gentle structure
Soft dogs still need clear rules.
It is tempting to go easy on a Cavapoo because the dog seems so agreeable. Yet a soft dog without structure can become anxious, since nothing in the day is predictable. Gentle structure means a consistent routine, a settled place to rest, short sessions with quiet markers, and clear boundaries taught through rewards rather than pressure. Predictability is a comfort to a dog like this.
Many Cavapoos enjoy people so much that greetings get messy. Teaching a sit or place for visitors, and rewarding calm instead of excited wriggling, gives a social dog something polite to do with that enthusiasm. Socialization should be paced to the dog: watching the world from a distance first, with retreat always possible, rather than being coaxed toward strangers or busy places.
- Predictable daily rhythm
- Quiet markers, calm rewards
- Paced, optional greetings
- A settled place to rest
Alone time
Separation distress needs patience and a plan.
Separation distress can be the hardest part of living with a Cavapoo. Safety and management come first: avoid leaving the dog alone longer than it can cope with while you work on it, arrange company where you can, and keep departures low-key. Start with your vet to rule out medical causes, and bring in a professional if distress persists or escalates.
From there, practice is gradual: brief absences the dog handles easily, extended only while calm holds. Behaviour may temporarily increase as routines change. Private Training at $150 plus GST provides a written plan for your home, Day Training offers weekday one-on-one work with a weekly go-home lesson, and Behaviour Rehab is built for deeper anxiety, customized after a full assessment.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Are Cavapoos easy to train?
Many are, particularly for house manners and basic cues, because they tend to be social and responsive to calm rewards. They do best when lessons stay short and the tone stays gentle.
Are Cavapoos hard to train?
The obedience side is rarely the hard part. Separation distress and a soft temperament that wilts under pressure are where owners more often need patience and, sometimes, professional help.
Which program suits Cavapoos training?
It depends on age and the main concern. Puppy Fundamentals works on crate comfort, socialization and early manners, and the consultation is where we recommend a format, steering you to a lighter one when that will do.
Are there health issues that affect Cavapoo training?
Health questions belong with your vet, especially if behaviour changes suddenly. Discomfort can look like reluctance or anxiety, so a check-up is a sensible first step.
