Are Bernedoodles easy to train?

Bernedoodle is a label that covers a wide range of dogs: a standard cross can be far heavier than a mini, coats run from wavy to tightly curled, and temperament depends on the individual as much as the pedigree. So we answer with a range, not a verdict. Below is what tends to help, where the hard parts often sit, and how our programs fit a Bernedoodle in a Calgary home.

Individual first

One cross, many different dogs.

In our experience many Bernedoodles are food-motivated and people-focused, which makes marker-and-reward teaching a natural fit for sit, down, place and a name response. Many also read tone closely and go quiet under heavy-handed pressure, so we keep pressure low and rewards clear. None of that comes automatically with the pedigree, though. Two dogs from the same litter can differ in drive, sensitivity and how quickly a new cue carries over to a new room.

Where the work often sits is adolescence and size. Many Bernedoodles keep growing after the basics are in place, and a known cue that fades around a strong smell or a passing dog usually tells us the skill was never proofed at that level of distraction, not that the dog is being difficult. For a standard-sized cross, a lunge toward a friend on an icy Calgary sidewalk becomes a footing problem for the person on the other end.

At home

Short sessions at home, then the right program.

At home we suggest short, frequent sessions and rules that stay the same. Loose-leash walking comes first because the adult weight often arrives before the manners do. Grooming practice is worth treating as training too: a curly or wavy coat needs regular brushing and clipping, so pairing a brush with a marker and a treat, a few seconds at a time, can make later groomer visits easier for many dogs. Teach place early so a big dog has a spot when guests arrive.

Puppy Fundamentals is a 3-week board and train at $2,775 plus GST covering crate comfort, leash manners, sit, down, place and socialization, with a follow-up within 60 days. On-Leash Foundations is a 2-week board and train at $1,865 plus GST, built for dogs who drag or lunge. Private Training is a one-hour session at $150 plus GST with a written weekly plan for owners doing the work themselves. The consultation is where we recommend the program, including a smaller one when it is enough.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Are Bernedoodles hard to train?

We would say not hard, but not automatic either. Many pick up cues readily and then need patient proofing through a long adolescence, and the pace differs from one dog to the next. Consistent rules and rewards matter more than any trait on the pedigree.

Are Bernedoodles stubborn?

Some owners describe it that way, but what we see is usually a cue that has not yet been practised around the thing competing for the dog's attention. We treat it as a proofing gap and rebuild the cue at lower distraction before adding more. Labels from either parent breed tell us little about the dog in front of us.

Are Bernedoodles good first dogs?

They can be, if a first-time owner is ready for regular grooming, daily training and a dog that may end up large. We suggest a structured plan from the first week rather than improvising the first year. A consultation is where we help work out what that plan looks like.

Are Bernedoodles easy to potty train?

We cannot promise that for any cross, but a crate, a tight schedule and quick trips outside after sleep, food and play give a puppy the best chance. The crate-training guide in our welcome package covers the routine. See a vet first if a house-trained dog suddenly starts having accidents.
