Service dog training in Calgary: what we do and don't do.
Honest answer up front: Northline K9 does not train or certify service dogs. Task training for disabilities and Alberta's public-access standards are a specialized, years-long discipline, and pretending otherwise would waste your money and risk your access rights. Here is how the real path works, and where our obedience and behaviour training legitimately fits into it.
How the real path works
Service dogs are made of two curriculums.
A working service dog needs disability-specific task training, retrieving medication, alerting to episodes, guiding, plus bomb-proof public behaviour that meets Alberta's assessment standards under the Service Dogs Act. Reputable routes run through established service-dog organizations or specialized trainers, and legitimate programs take one to two years. Anyone offering to certify your pet in a weekend online is selling paper, not a service dog.
Emotional support animals are a different category again: they have no special public-access rights in Alberta, and no certification changes that. A calm, well-trained companion, which we absolutely can help build, is exactly what an ESA should be.

Every service-dog candidate needs the layer we do build daily: rock-solid obedience, neutrality around dogs and people, calm public manners, and confidence in new environments. Owners pursuing the service-dog path sometimes start their young prospect here for foundations before entering task training elsewhere, and owners whose real need is a steady, mannerly companion often discover that is the whole ask.

The questions people ask us.
How much does service dog training cost?
Full service-dog training through legitimate programs commonly runs $15,000 to $40,000 over one to two years, though established charitable organizations place dogs at little or no cost with long waitlists. Be wary of anyone quoting a few hundred dollars for certification.
Can you train my dog to be a service dog?
No, and we will not pretend to. We can build the obedience and public-manners foundation a service-dog prospect needs, and we can refer you toward the specialized organizations that handle task training and Alberta assessment.
Does my anxiety dog count as a service dog in Alberta?
Only if trained to perform specific tasks for a disability and qualified under Alberta's Service Dogs Act process. An emotional support animal, however comforting, does not carry public-access rights in Alberta.
What about therapy dog training?
Therapy dogs visit facilities with their owners and are certified by visiting-therapy organizations with their own testing. The calm obedience we train is the prerequisite; the certification comes from those organizations directly.
