How to stop a dog guarding the couch

A dog who stiffens, growls or snaps when someone sits down or reaches past them on the sofa is guarding a spot, not being stubborn. Many dogs guard resting places because the couch is soft, high and full of family smell. The order is simple: remove the access, teach a well-paid exit, and bring in help for the growling.

Furniture off limits

Close the couch before you train.

While you work on this, your dog does not get on the couch at all. Lay a laundry basket or upturned cushions across it, close the living room door when you are out, or use a baby gate. Indoors, a light house line lets you guide your dog off furniture without reaching for the collar, which is exactly the move that sets off many guarders.

Give your dog a better spot nearby: a raised bed or thick mat that is clearly theirs. Children stay out of all of this, including asking the dog off. Do not reach over, shove, or sit beside a guarding dog to test them. And never punish a growl. A growl is a warning, and punishing it can teach a dog to skip straight to a bite.

  • Block cushions when unsupervised
  • House line for guidance
  • A bed of their own
  • No reaching over the dog

Off and place

Make getting down the best deal in the room.

Teach off where it is easy, from a low step or an ottoman the dog does not guard. Toss a treat onto the floor, mark as the paws land, and add the word off. Then teach place on the dog bed with generous rewards. When you practise near the couch, the dog should already be on the floor; you are rewarding the choice of the bed, not winning a standoff.

Location guarding with growling, stiffening, lip lifting or a snap needs a professional assessment before you go further, and a vet check is wise if it appeared suddenly, since pain can make a resting dog touchy. Our Behaviour Rehab is built for guarding and aggression, and dogs with bite histories are accepted after a full assessment. A one-hour private session can also set up a written plan for your home.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Why does my dog growl when I try to move him off the couch?

Often the dog values the spot and has learned that reaching or pulling means losing it. Some dogs are also sore or startled when disturbed while resting. A growl is communication, so stop and give space rather than pushing through it.

Should I let my dog on the couch?

While guarding is active, no. Furniture access can sometimes return later by invitation only, once off and place are solid and a professional has seen the dog. That decision depends on your dog and your household.

Is couch guarding a dominance problem?

Guarding a spot is usually better understood as protecting something valuable than as a bid for rank. Seeing it that way leads to better choices: management, rewarded exits and an assessment rather than confrontation.

What if my dog has bitten someone on the couch?

Stop all furniture access, keep children and visitors away from the dog in that room, and book a professional assessment. Our Behaviour Rehab accepts dogs with bite histories after a full assessment. Talk to your vet as well, to check for pain or other medical causes.
