Wildfire smoke days and your dog
Smoke rolls in, the sky turns orange, and the long walk your dog counts on suddenly looks like a bad idea. Smoke days can stretch on, and a dog with no outlet tends to invent one, usually involving the couch cushions. The good news is that a busy brain tires a dog surprisingly well. With a short list of indoor games and a plan for the toilet trips, a hazy week becomes a training week.

Check the air
Let the index and your vet set the outdoor limits.
Before deciding on a walk, check the Air Quality Health Index. Alberta posts current readings for communities across the province on a scale that starts at 1 and runs to 10+, where a higher number means higher risk, and heavy smoke can push readings above 10. When the reading rises, keep outdoor time to brief toilet trips on the leash, and close windows. Doors stay open only while the dog is secured on a leash, to lower the chance of a smoky-day bolt.
The health side belongs with your vet. Ask whether your dog's age, breed or any existing condition changes how much outdoor time is sensible on smoky days. If you notice coughing, laboured breathing or unusual tiredness, call your vet rather than trying to judge it yourself. Toilet access stays on its normal schedule. Shorter outings never mean making a dog wait to relieve itself.
- Check the AQHI first
- Short leashed toilet trips
- Windows closed, doors secured
- Vet for any breathing concerns
Indoor training week
Swap distance for brain work inside the house.
Scent work is the best substitute for a long walk. Hide a few pieces of kibble in a room, let the dog watch the first ones, then make the hides harder. Scatter feeding in a towel, a frozen stuffed chew and a cardboard box of crumpled paper with food inside all work the nose. Ten minutes of searching often leaves a dog calmer than a quick lap around the block.
Use the time for skills that never get practised on walks. Build duration on a place bed while you cook, rehearse name response from room to room, and practise sit and down with a doorbell sound playing softly. Keep sessions short and stop while the dog is still keen. If you want a written plan for the week, Private Training at $150 + GST per one-hour session includes one customized to your home.
