Daylight saving and dark walks in Calgary

One Sunday in November the clocks fall back, and the after-work walk that was golden last week is now pitch black. Drivers see less, joggers loom out of nowhere, and the off-leash field feels very different at 5:30 pm. Nothing about your dog changed overnight, but the walk did. A few adjustments to gear, route and expectations keep the dark months safe and a lot less tense.

Seen and safe

Light up the dog and the person holding the leash.

Visibility comes first. A clip-on light or an illuminated collar on the dog, reflective trim on the leash and a headlamp or bright jacket for you make the pair visible to drivers turning at crosswalks. Pick routes with streetlights and sidewalks over unlit pathway edges, and cross at marked intersections. A fixed-length leash gives more control than a retractable one when you cannot see far ahead.

Wildlife is part of dark walks in this city. The City of Calgary advises keeping dogs leashed in off-leash areas when coyotes are present or in the area. If a coyote approaches, the City says not to run or turn away, but to shout, wave your arms overhead and back away slowly while keeping eye contact. Keep the leash short and your dog close at your side while you do.

Reactive after dark

Give a reactive dog more room when the light goes.

For a reactive dog, darkness can shrink the warning time. A person in a hood or another dog may appear twenty steps away instead of at the end of the block, and many dogs react harder to surprises at close range. Manage before you train: walk wider streets, turn around early, step behind a parked car to create a screen, and accept a shorter, quieter route on the worst evenings.

Training can continue in the light. Practise name response, a turn-and-go and loose-leash walking in daylight on weekends, then use those skills on dark walks once they are fluent. If reactivity is escalating or you feel unsafe, a professional assessment is the right next step. Behaviour Rehab is built for reactivity and fear work at the dog's pace, and the consultation may suggest a smaller program if that will do.
