Border Collies
Border Collie training in Calgary
A Border Collie without a job will invent one, and in a Calgary suburb that job is usually herding your kids, the neighbour's bikes and every jogger on the pathway. Owners come to us with a dog who stares at movement, crouches at cyclists and cannot stop bringing the ball. The dog is not broken. It is working. Our job is to redirect that work somewhere useful and teach you to run it.

The working brain
Everything that moves is livestock until told otherwise.
The Border Collies we handle are rarely rude for the sake of it. They are watching. A kid running across the yard, a bike on the pathway, a rabbit at the fence line: each one trips the same circuit, the crouch, the stare, the sprint. On leash that looks like lunging at cyclists. Off leash it looks like a dog who checks in beautifully until something moves and then hears nothing. The fetch obsession is the same drive with nowhere else to go.
Calgary makes it harder in specific ways. The pathway system is full of fast, quiet things on wheels, which is a herding dog's nightmare and dream at once. Suburban yards are small, fenced and dull, so boredom comes out as fence-running, barking at every noise and shredding whatever was left outside. Noise sensitivity shows up around fireworks, thunder and, for some dogs, the beep of a truck reversing three streets over. Adolescence sharpens all of it.
- Chasing bikes and joggers
- Lunging at cyclists on leash
- Fetch that never ends
- Recall lost to movement
A job to do
Give the drive a direction and a stop button.
For most adolescent and adult Border Collies, Functional Off-Leash is the right fit: three weeks of board and train at $3,030 plus GST, Educator collar included, built around a recall that holds when a cyclist passes or a rabbit breaks cover. The collar is introduced after the dog understands the recall with markers and rewards, never as the first step. Dogs who need distance work, an off-leash heel and public manners go on to Advanced Off-Leash, four weeks at $3,940 with two follow-ups.
Cyclist reactivity that has tipped into genuine fear or aggression is assessed first and often belongs in Behaviour Rehab, five to six weeks at $4,850 to $5,760. Puppies start in Puppy Fundamentals, where structured socialization around movement is built early. Owners learn the mechanics at the handover lesson: how to interrupt the stare, how to cue the recall before the chase begins, and how to run a fetch session with rules so it stops being a compulsion and becomes a reward. Follow-ups are free.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Which Border Collie trainer in Calgary does off-leash work?
Northline K9 runs two off-leash board and train programs, Functional Off-Leash at $3,030 and Advanced Off-Leash at $3,940 plus GST, both one-on-one. Both include the Educator collar and the owner education to use it, and both are proofed in the real world rather than a fenced field.
What does Border Collie puppy training in Calgary cover?
Puppy Fundamentals is three weeks at $2,775 plus GST and covers crate comfort, leash manners, name, sit, down, place and structured socialization. For a Border Collie pup the socialization piece leans on movement: bikes, kids and other dogs at a distance, so the staring habit never gets a foothold.
How to train a Border Collie in Calgary around bikes and joggers?
Teach the recall and a solid down at home first, then take them to a quiet stretch of pathway and reward the check-in before the bike is close, not after the lunge. Private Training at $150 per session gives you a written weekly plan for exactly that progression. If the chase is already a reflex, a board and train breaks the pattern faster.
Are Border Collies hard to train?
They learn faster than the person teaching them, which is the actual difficulty. A Border Collie picks up the cue in three repetitions and the loophole in four. The training has to be clear, consistent and paired with a real outlet, or the dog writes its own curriculum.
