Board and train for downtown condo dogs
A dog in a Beltline or Mission tower never gets a quiet walk to the end of the driveway. Every trip outside starts with a hallway, an elevator shared with neighbours, a lobby with deliveries, and a pathway busy with runners, bikes and other dogs before the first patch of grass. Condo life compresses a day of distractions into the first five minutes, so the skills have to be solid, not decorative.

Vertical living
The elevator is a small obedience test every single day.
The dog sits at your side, away from the doors, and stays seated as they open; you step in together, the dog turns to face out and stands or sits quietly, and the leash never spans a closing door. In the lobby, heel past the delivery cart and the neighbour's dog without a greeting unless you choose one. On-Leash Foundations, two weeks at $1,865 + GST, works on heel, sit, down, stay and place around everyday distractions.
Outside, the Beltline and Mission pathways are shared with runners, strollers, bikes and a steady stream of dogs, so calm passing on a narrow strip matters more than any trick. Patios ask for a down-stay under a table while plates go past, which is public manners work: Advanced Off-Leash, four weeks at $3,940 + GST, covers public manners and sit, stay and down at distance. Puppy Fundamentals covers the same ground for pups under new sights and sounds, calmly.
- Sit while the elevator doors open
- Heel past the delivery cart
- Calm passing on narrow pathways
- Down-stay under a patio table
Rules, then week one
Read your building's pet rules before the dog comes home.
Condo rules differ by building, so treat these as general: many buildings expect dogs leashed in all common areas, some assign a particular elevator or route for pets, and many have noise provisions that a barking dog can breach through a shared wall. Confirm yours with the board or property manager before the program ends, because the handover lesson is more useful when you know which door, which elevator and which patch of grass the dog will use.
The first week home moves the training into the building. Ride the elevator at quiet hours first, then at the busy ones, asking for the same sit each time. Use place in the unit while you cook or answer the door. Relief trips run on a schedule the dog can count on; a dog is never made to wait to prove a point. Hallway barking may rise in a new routine, and if it persists or escalates, get a professional to look at it.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Is board and train worth it for a dog living in a condo?
It depends on what the dog struggles with, and the consultation is where that gets decided, including recommending a smaller program when that covers it. What board and train offers a condo dog is one-on-one work on heel, sit, stay and place around everyday distractions, then a handover lesson so you can run those in your own elevator and lobby. Private Training at $150 + GST a session is the hands-on alternative.
How do you get a dog to behave in the elevator?
Ask for a sit at your side before you press the button, keep the leash short enough that it can never span the closing doors, and step in together rather than letting the dog lead. Face the dog toward the doors and reward quiet standing or sitting with a marker. Start at quiet hours and add neighbours and other dogs gradually; if the dog growls at someone in that small space, step out and plan a professional assessment.
Which training program is best for an apartment dog in Calgary?
There is no single answer, which is why the program is recommended at the consultation and not from a web page. On-Leash Foundations covers heel, place and everyday distractions, Advanced Off-Leash adds public manners for the patio crowd, and Day Training keeps the dog home nightly with drop-off 8 to 10 am and pick-up 5 to 7 pm, Monday to Friday, at $650 + GST per week.
How do you stop a dog barking at noises in a condo hallway?
Manage first: a place bed away from the door, something steady like a fan to soften footsteps, and a crate the dog treats as a den when you are out. Then mark and reward quiet after each hallway sound; many dogs tend to settle with routine, and some need more. Barking rooted in anxiety is assessed in Behaviour Rehab, and escalation is a reason to get a professional in sooner.
