Board and train before summer at the lake

The lake lot has no fence, the dock has no railing, and the neighbours have a dog, a boat and a toddler. Every summer weekend from the May long weekend onward asks your dog to be trustworthy in a place with more freedom and more hazards than the city. Spring is when that gets built, with the handover lesson done before the first drive out.

Water, dock, boats

The lake sets three tests the city never does.

Recall near water is its own skill. A dog that comes back on a walk will often keep going when the reward on the far side is a lake, and once the dog is swimming, the leash is not an option. Functional Off-Leash works on recall around distractions for dogs with decent manners who are ready for real freedom, the campsite included, and the Micro or Mini Educator remote collar comes with it so you can reach a dog at the shoreline.

Dock manners are the second piece. A sit and a stay at the top of the dock, a dog who waits to be released before going in, no launching past a child on the ladder. Those are the sit, stay and place skills from On-Leash Foundations, carried onto planks over water. The third piece is neutrality: a boat motor starting, the neighbours' dog on their dock, and people walking past the lot are things to watch, not things to react to.

  • Recall before the shoreline
  • Sit and wait on the dock
  • Neutral to boats and neighbours
  • Handover before the long weekend

No fence, cold water

The lake lot has no fence, and the water is colder than it looks.

A lake lot without a fence turns every open door into an off-leash decision. The dog wanders to the neighbours' fire pit or follows a smell to the road. Management comes first: a long line clipped on until the recall has been proven on that exact property, a place command on the deck that holds while you unload the truck, and a door routine, on leash, where the dog waits for a release. Freedom is earned lot by lot, not granted at the gate.

Water safety is simpler and less negotiable. Spring lake water is cold, and a dog that swims hard after a boat or a stick can get into trouble fast. Know where the dog can climb out before you let it in; a dock with no ladder and a steep bank is a trap. A canine life jacket with a handle is cheap insurance on the boat. A dog that has never swum is not a swimmer because it is a retriever.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

How far ahead of the May long weekend should the program start?

Count back from the long weekend by the length of the program recommended at the consultation, with the handover lesson landing before you load the truck. The maths is simple; the dog is the variable, and the consultation is where we talk about that. If On-Leash Foundations covers what your lake weekends need, that is what gets recommended rather than a longer program.

Will my dog come back if he's already running toward the lake?

That is the exact distraction Functional Off-Leash is built to work on, and the remote collar it includes is how you reach a dog at distance when your voice has stopped mattering. Until the recall has been proven on your own lot, a long line does the job. Nobody can promise a particular Saturday, which is why the long line stays on until the recall has earned its freedom.

How do I stop my dog wandering off at the cabin?

Manage first: a long line, a place command on the deck, and a door routine on leash. Then build the recall and the neutrality to neighbours and boats, which is what the off-leash programs work on. A lake lot is one of the hardest places to hand out freedom, so hand it out slowly.

Can you train my dog to be calm around boats and the neighbours' dog?

Neutrality to things that move and make noise is distraction training, which On-Leash Foundations covers on leash and Functional and Advanced Off-Leash extend off leash. A boat motor and a dog barking from the next dock are treated as distractions to work through, not emergencies. Which program fits your dog is settled at the consultation.
