Board and train before ski season

For many Calgary households, the first mountain weekends arrive in late autumn, and the dog either comes along or stays home. Coming along means a base area full of skis, poles, boot bags and strangers in bulky layers, a long drive, and a trail where the dog is behind the first tree in two bounds. That is a specific set of skills, and autumn is when to build them.

Base area to trail

Three skills a mountain weekend asks of a dog.

The first is a heel that holds up in a base area: people walking fast with skis on their shoulders, poles swinging at dog-eye level, snowboards dropped flat, kids in helmets. On-Leash Foundations works on heel and loose-leash walking around everyday distractions; Advanced Off-Leash takes the heel off leash and adds public manners. The second is calm around strangers in gear, which many dogs find strange. Toques, goggles and boots change how people look.

The third is recall on a snowy trail, which is a different animal from recall in a summer field. A dog nose-down in a drift is often not listening, and other dogs appear around corners already off leash. Functional Off-Leash is built for reliable recall around distractions, with an Educator remote collar included and owner education on using it. The remote lets you reach a dog that is well up the trail and facing the wrong way. Raise the drive at the consultation.

Counting back

Start the clock from the first weekend, not from the snow.

Timing is arithmetic, not forecasting. Pick the first mountain weekend you want the dog with you, then count back the length of the program the consultation recommends: two weeks for On-Leash Foundations, three for Functional Off-Leash, four for Advanced Off-Leash, with the handover lesson at the end. A program that runs through autumn gets real-world proofing in cooler weather, earlier dark and people dressed for the cold, which look nothing like the summer crowd.

Then there are the trips the dog skips: the avalanche course weekend, the trip with friends who are allergic, the day the forecast turns ugly. Graduates and existing clients can use graduate boarding at $65 + GST per night. Booking details for those nights are a question for the consultation. The honest version of any recommendation includes the smaller program when a smaller program covers what your weekends actually need, and we will say so.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

When should I book board and train to be ready for ski season?

Count back from your first mountain weekend by the length of the program recommended at the consultation, and leave room for the handover lesson. That is arithmetic, not a forecast of how your dog will do. Which program that is, including whether a shorter one does the job, is decided at the consultation.

Can a dog really learn to recall off leash in the snow?

Functional Off-Leash works on reliable recall around distractions and includes an Educator remote collar and the owner education to use it. Snow, other dogs and skiers are distractions like any other, and real-world proofing is part of every program. How an individual dog takes to it is something we talk through honestly at the consultation.

Is the ski hill base area too much for a dog?

For many dogs it is a lot: fast-moving people, gear at eye level, and noise. Public manners and heel around heavy distraction are what Advanced Off-Leash works on, and On-Leash Foundations covers heel on leash through everyday distractions. Start on the quiet edge of the lot and work in, rather than parking at the front door on day one.

What do I do with the dog on the weekends he can't come?

Graduate boarding is available to graduates and existing clients at $65 + GST per night. It is one of the practical reasons to finish a program before the season rather than during it. Ask about specific dates at the consultation.
