Board and train and Calgary's pathway culture

Calgary's pathway network runs for hundreds of kilometres and everybody uses it at once: commuters on bikes, runners in pairs, strollers, scooters, and more dogs than any one of them wants to meet at a blind corner. The culture that makes it work is unwritten in places and written down in others, and a dog who can heel, pass calmly and come back when called is the price of admission.

Keep right, leash short

The written rules decide the skills before any training does.

The City's leash guidelines are plain. Calgary is an on-leash city: dogs are leashed unless on their owner's property or inside an off-leash area marked by signs. On pathways, which the City defines as asphalt, concrete or brick surfaces, dogs must be leashed at all times, the leash can be no more than 2 metres long, dogs stay on the right-hand side except when passing, and they must be under control and may not obstruct other users.

The rules write the skills. A leash under 2 metres means heel, not a dog on a long line. Keeping right is easiest with the dog on your right, on the edge side, so you are between the dog and whatever passes and the dog holds position as a bike goes by. Not obstructing means stepping onto the grass for a stroller or an oncoming dog. Recall belongs inside signed off-leash areas, the only place the leash comes off.

  • Leash no longer than 2 metres
  • Keep right except when passing
  • Hold heel as bikes pass
  • Leash off only where signs allow

Programs and proofing

Pick the program for the pathway you actually walk.

On-Leash Foundations is built for dogs who drag or lunge at other dogs: two weeks at $1,865 + GST on loose-leash walking, heel, sit, down, stay and everyday distractions. Functional Off-Leash is built for dogs with decent manners ready for the signed off-leash areas: three weeks at $3,030 + GST on recall around distractions, Educator remote collar included. Fear-driven lunging at bikes goes to a Behaviour Rehab assessment. The consultation makes the call, and a smaller program is recommended when that will do.

Proofing after the handover is your job. Start at an off-peak hour on a wide section, dog on the right edge, in short heel stretches with release breaks on the grass. Add one distraction at a time, a runner, then a bike, then a dog, and mark and reward the calm pass. Recall drills happen only inside a signed off-leash area, on a long line first. Lunging can rise briefly around new traffic; persistence or escalation means a professional should reassess.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Do dogs have to be on a leash on Calgary pathways?

Yes. The City of Calgary's leash guidelines say dogs must be leashed at all times on all pathways, meaning asphalt, concrete or brick surfaces, with a leash no longer than 2 metres, and must keep to the right-hand side except when passing. The rules come from the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw and the Parks and Pathways Bylaw.

How do you stop a dog lunging at bikes on the pathway?

Create distance first: step off onto the grass, ask for a sit with the dog on the far side of you, and let the bike go by without a correction for the noise the dog makes. Then mark and reward the moments the dog looks at a bike and stays loose, starting far enough away that it can. If the lunging reads as fear, or it escalates, a professional behaviour assessment is the next step.

Can a dog be off leash on the river pathway in Calgary?

No. Pathways are on-leash under the City's guidelines, and the only places a dog can legally be off leash are designated off-leash areas marked by signs, or the owner's own property. Functional Off-Leash and Advanced Off-Leash build recall and off-leash manners for exactly those signed areas, not for the pathway itself.

Which board and train program teaches heel for busy pathways?

On-Leash Foundations is the program built around heel, loose-leash walking and working around everyday distractions, two weeks at $1,865 + GST with lifetime phone and email support. Advanced Off-Leash adds an off-leash heel and public manners for owners who want the dog everywhere. The consultation recommends the program, and the smaller one gets the nod when it is enough.
