Why dogs do it
My dog doesn't know how to relax
Some dogs pace from room to room all evening, follow every footstep, and leap up at the smallest sound. Owners often respond with another walk or another game, and the dog gets fitter and more wound up. An off switch is not something a dog is born with. It is trained, the same way sit is trained, just much more quietly.

Why the motor runs
Where constant restlessness tends to come from.
Many restless dogs have simply learned that action pays. Every time they nudge, bark or bring a toy, something happens, while lying quietly earns nothing. Others get so much exercise and play that their stamina keeps climbing. An unpredictable day adds to it: if walks, meals and visitors arrive at random times, the dog stays on watch because anything could happen next.
Anxiety looks a little different. An anxious dog may pant, scan windows, startle easily or follow you closely, even when tired. Health can play a part too, since itching, pain or a sore belly make lying still uncomfortable. If the dog circles, lies down and gets up again repeatedly, or is restless mostly at night, start with a vet rather than a training plan.
- Settles only when exhausted
- Demands attention when ignored
- Pants and scans the windows
- Gets up right after lying down
Building an off switch
Capture calm, then give it a home.
Tonight, keep a few treats in your pocket. Whenever the dog lies down on its own, quietly place one between its paws, without words or fuss. Then pick a mat and a regular quiet time, after a walk and before your dinner, with a long-lasting chew. Use a gate or a leash held by an adult to keep the dog near the mat. Our how-to guide covers the full settle routine.
Dial back the extra games for a while and keep the day predictable. If restlessness comes with panting, pacing at night, or trouble lying down, talk to your vet. For a dog that needs structure all day, Day Training runs weekdays at $650 per week. On-Leash Foundations works on the place command, and a private session builds a written home plan.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
Why can't my dog settle down?
Often the dog has learned that activity gets attention while calm gets nothing. Too much stimulation, an unpredictable routine, anxiety or discomfort can all add to it.
Will more exercise make my dog calmer?
Sometimes, but piling on exercise can just build a fitter, busier dog. Pairing sensible exercise with a taught settle routine tends to work better.
How do I teach my dog an off switch?
Reward calm the dog offers on its own, then build a mat routine at a set quiet time. Keep it low-key so the reward does not wind the dog back up.
When is a restless dog a vet issue?
When restlessness is new, worse at night, or comes with panting, pacing, licking or trouble lying down. Those signs need a vet before any training.
