Choosing a trainer

Is my dog too old for board and train?

Owners of older dogs arrive at this question apologetically, as if a nine-year-old pulling on the leash is less deserving of help than a puppy. It is not. Board and train is open to dogs of all ages at Northline K9. The real questions are different: what your vet says about your dog's body, how the plan is shaped for a senior, and whether a stay away from home is the right format.

Vet first

Start with your vet, then let us plan around their advice.

Before booking an older dog, talk to your vet. Ask whether there is anything about joints, heart, hearing, eyesight or stamina that should shape a training day, and whether a sudden increase in activity is wise. That is not our call to make, and it is better known before your dog arrives than discovered on a walk. Bring whatever your vet says to the consultation. It changes how we plan, and in some cases it changes which program we suggest.

The plan is then built around that conversation, with skills taught with markers and rewards first and tools matched to the individual dog. Honesty also means saying when a stay away is the wrong format. A dog who has never spent a night apart from you, or whose health is easier managed at home, may be better served by Private Training or Day Training with evenings at home, and we will say so at the consultation.

Why structure helps

What a predictable day gives an older dog.

Older dogs are not blank slates, and that cuts both ways. A dog of ten has years of practice at whatever habit brought you here, and years of practice at reading people, which can be an asset once the rules are clear. The structured routine every board and train is built on offers that dog clarity: the same cue for place, the same marker for getting it right, day after day. Some dogs may settle more easily once the day becomes predictable, though every dog is different.

Structure also changes the walk, which for a senior is often the best part of the day. On-Leash Foundations works on loose-leash walking and heel around everyday distractions, and hauling is hard on an old body and on the hand holding the leash. Behaviour Rehab is built for anxiety and reactivity, including a senior who has grown snappy, and it starts with a full assessment. Either way, the handover lesson and free follow-ups bring the routine home with the dog.

Asked and answered

The questions people ask us.

Is there an age limit for board and train?

No. We take dogs of all ages, and age by itself never rules a dog out. What can change the plan is what your vet says about your dog's body, so have that conversation before the consultation.

Can a 10 year old dog still learn new commands?

Yes. An older dog can learn the same way a young one does, with markers and rewards first and clear, repeated cues, and years of reading people can work in their favour. The plan is adjusted to the dog and to what your vet advises.

My senior dog has started growling. Is that a training problem?

See your vet first, because new growling in an older dog can have a physical cause that no training should try to override, and growling is never something to punish. Once your vet has weighed in, bring their notes to the consultation and we will assess what the behaviour work should look like.

Would private lessons be better than board and train for an old dog?

Sometimes, and we will tell you when. A dog who struggles away from home, or whose care is simpler in their own kitchen, can work on the same skills through Private Training at $150 + GST a session or Day Training with evenings at home. The consultation weighs that with you, and the smaller option is recommended whenever it is enough.
