How long does it take to train a reactive dog?
The program has a length; the dog's progress does not. Behaviour Rehab runs five to six weeks as a board and train, built after a full assessment. How much changes for a particular dog inside those weeks, and how much continues at home, depends on its history, its triggers, how close one can get, its age and who holds the leash. We describe progress by what changes on the walk, not by a calendar.

Five factors
Five things set the pace, and none is a date.
Years of practised lunging often take longer to unlearn than a month of it, and a bite history means a full assessment first. Reacting only to dogs is a narrower job than dogs, bikes and kids. Age and household matter too. Threshold is the factor most often misread, because it is not a fixed distance: a dog might hold together at thirty metres and tip over at sixty when tired or when a second dog appears. Distance and food are clues, not a test.
Progress is something you can watch. Working distance is one measure: how close a trigger can get before the dog stops being able to respond to you, tracked over weeks rather than walks. Recovery is another: how long the dog takes to come back down after a surprise. The third is your handling, the one you control: a slack leash, and spotting the trigger before the dog does. None of these move in a straight line, and we do not quote a rate.

After Behaviour Rehab
The program ends, the routine at home begins.
Behaviour Rehab is a five to six week board and train, and that number belongs to the program, not the dog. It includes daily, individualized work, in-depth owner education so you learn the why and not just the what, a handover lesson, and two free follow-up sessions. The handover lesson is where the dog's routine is passed to the person who will keep it going, and what the education covers depends on the plan built after your dog's assessment.
The routine the dog lived with us is the part most worth carrying home, because reactivity tends to be managed as much as it is trained. At home that can look like predictable rest, a walk with clear rules, and fewer chances to rehearse the old pattern at the window or the front door. Two follow-up sessions are included, and the weeks after handover are, in our experience, when questions appear that did not exist before. Bring the walk that went sideways.

How do you know if a reactive dog is improving?
Two measures we find useful are working distance, meaning how close a trigger can get before the dog can no longer respond to you, and recovery, meaning how long it takes to settle after a surprise. A third is the handler: whether the leash stays slack and you spot the trigger before the dog does. None of them moves in a straight line, so the trend over weeks tells us more than any single walk.

Can a reactive dog be fully cured?
We will not predict that before an assessment. Some dogs come to look ordinary on a walk, others do best for life with a thoughtful handler and a bit of distance, and the factors above decide which. Dogs with a bite history are accepted into Behaviour Rehab after a full assessment, with the plan built around what it finds.
