Dog etiquette at off-leash parks
An off-leash park is the one public place where your dog's manners are on display without a leash to fall back on. The written rules are short. The unwritten ones are where a lot of park friction comes from: the dog who will not come back, the ball that starts a scuffle, the owner on their phone. Here is how regulars keep it pleasant.

Recall comes first
Calling your dog back before it gets loud.
Calgary's rules set the bar. In designated off-leash areas, the City says dogs must stay in sight of their owners and respond to voice, sound or visual commands. That is a recall standard, not a suggestion. Call your dog away when play gets lopsided, when a newcomer looks worried, or when a group starts chasing one dog. Recall often works best at the first stiff body or raised hackle, long before growling.
Practise recall in the park on purpose, several times a visit, rewarding it and then releasing your dog back to play. That way coming back never means the fun ends. If your dog ignores you around other dogs, they are not ready for a busy park yet. Use a long line in quiet hours, or train recall around distractions first, and keep hands well away from mouths if dogs do tangle.
- Comes back mid-play reliably
- Stays within your sight
- Checks in without being called
- Released back to play often
Park manners
Toys, gates, pickup and knowing when to go.
Leave the ball launcher at home when the park is crowded. Toys bring a dozen dogs into one tight cluster, and many dogs will guard a ball they did not bring. Keep the entrance clear: unclip just inside, then move away so arriving dogs are not met by a crowd at the gate. Carry bags, because the City requires a suitable means to pick up. Posted signs win if they differ from a map listing.
Leave early. A dog who is tired, overstimulated or starting to bully is better taken home five minutes too soon than five minutes too late. Pathways that cross off-leash areas still need a leash of two metres or less. Our Functional Off-Leash program works on recall around distractions and off-leash manners over three weeks for $3,030 plus GST, with an Educator remote collar and owner education included.

Asked and answered
The questions people ask us.
What are the rules at Calgary off-leash parks?
The City says dogs in designated off-leash areas must stay in sight of their owners and respond to voice, sound or visual commands. Owners must carry a way to pick up after their dog, and posted signs take priority over listings.
Should I bring a ball to the dog park?
Not when it is busy. Toys tend to draw dogs into tight groups and can spark guarding, so save fetch for quiet times or an empty corner.
When should I leave the off-leash park?
Leave while your dog is still playing well, before fatigue or overexcitement shows. If your dog starts pestering others or ignoring your recall, that is the signal to clip on and go.
My dog will not come back at the dog park. What now?
Stop giving the park a chance to rehearse it: use a long line or quieter hours while you train recall around distractions. If you want help, the consultation recommends the program that fits, including a smaller one when that is enough.
