Does board and train help with separation anxiety?
This question usually arrives after a shredded door frame or a note from a neighbour, with the hope that a few weeks away will settle it. We would rather be straight: a live-in program can work on a dog's baseline, routine and confidence, but the trigger is usually the owner leaving, and that happens at home. Here is what Behaviour Rehab works on, what stays at home, and when we suggest a vet first.

What it works on
A live-in program works on the baseline, not the front door.
Behaviour Rehab is our five to six week board and train for anxiety, reactivity and aggression, priced at $4,850 to $5,760 plus GST and customized to the dog after a full assessment. For an anxious dog it works on anxiety rehabilitation, confidence building and structured socialization, with daily individualized work inside a structured routine. The dog lives that routine, sleeping in clean, comfortable accommodations with daily exercise, enrichment and individual care, and updates reach the owner through social media and phone or email check-ins.
What a stay here cannot do is rehearse the owner's front door. The sound of keys, the coat going on, the car backing out and a long quiet workday all belong to the home, so that is where they have to be worked on. That is why Behaviour Rehab includes in-depth owner education, a handover lesson and two free follow-up sessions: the plan the assessment produces has to travel home with the dog, and the owner is the one who carries it.

Vet first, sometimes
Some dogs need a vet before they need us.
We are trainers, not a clinic, and some dogs need a vet before they need us. When a dog is hurting itself when left, has changed suddenly, or seems to be in pain, we suggest a vet visit first so anything medical is looked at before training starts. We do not diagnose, and medication is the vet's conversation, not ours. What we can do is listen to what leaving looks like and say whether an assessment makes sense next.
Day Training is another option: Monday to Friday, drop-off between 10 am and 12 pm and pick-up between 5 and 7 pm, at $800 plus GST per week, with a weekly one-hour go-home session. It is built for dogs who need consistent work and owners who want them home every night, and it works on one-on-one daily training and structured socialization. Which option fits, if either, is what the consultation and the full assessment decide, and we recommend the smaller program when it is enough.

Can board and train fix separation anxiety?
We do not promise that. Behaviour Rehab works on anxiety rehabilitation and confidence building inside a structured routine, and it comes with in-depth owner education, a handover lesson and two follow-up sessions so the work can continue at home, where the departures actually happen.
Will board and train make separation anxiety worse?
We cannot rule anything in or out before an assessment, which is why Behaviour Rehab is customized after one. What we can describe is the day: one-on-one training, a structured routine the dog lives rather than sits through, enrichment, and updates to the owner through social media and phone or email check-ins.
Should I see a vet before training for separation anxiety?
We suggest it when the dog is hurting itself, has changed suddenly, or seems to be in pain, so anything medical is looked at first. We are trainers, not a clinic, and whether a vet stays involved alongside training is the vet's call. At the consultation we will say plainly if we think a vet visit should come first.
Is day training or board and train better for separation anxiety?
We do not decide that by severity on a page.
