Stampede fireworks and dog anxiety
The Stampede is the loudest ten days on the Calgary calendar, and the fireworks are only the headline. There is the parade, the extra traffic, the neighbours' parties that run late. For a lot of dogs it is a marathon of nights spent shaking under a desk. Most owners do not realize how many dogs it affects until they own one of them.

Ten nights running
The dog that is fine on night one and wrecked by night six.
A single firework show is a bad evening. The Stampede is a different animal because the fireworks come back the next night, and the next, for the full run. Dogs rarely habituate the way owners hope. More often they start anticipating: a few nights in, the dog is pacing at dusk before a single shell goes up, and the whole day starts to bend around the fear. Add parade day crowds and noise, and the load is real.
The signs are wider than trembling. Panting in a cool room, drooling, pacing loops, hiding in the tub, refusing food, scratching at doors, whining that will not stop, or a dog who suddenly needs to be touching you. Some dogs go still and quiet, which looks like coping and is not. If the dog is worse on the last night than the first, the fear is building rather than fading, and that is the dog to plan for next year.

Weeks out
Start weeks before the first shell, not the afternoon of.
Sound work is the backbone. Play recorded fireworks at a volume the dog barely registers while good things happen: dinner, a chew, a game. Raise it over days, never past the point where the dog stops eating. Build the den too, somewhere interior with a crate or bed and the door left open, so the dog owns the choice. On show nights, walk long and early, feed before dusk, and be home with the curtains drawn and a fan running before the sky lights up.
Never punish fear. A dog shaking under the table is not misbehaving, and a correction there teaches nothing except that you are unsafe too. If the dog cannot eat, settle or sleep despite the prep, talk to your vet about medication before the run starts, not on night three. How do I calm my dog during Stampede fireworks?
In the moment, stay calm yourself, keep the house dim with the TV on, and let the dog pick its own spot, even if that is the bathtub. Do not force cuddles and do not force the dog out of hiding. Quiet, boring company is the best thing you can offer once the show has started.
Are Stampede fireworks bad for dogs?
For dogs who are noise sensitive, yes, and the repetition is the problem. Ten nights of fireworks means ten chances for the fear to deepen, and plenty of dogs are more anxious on the final night than the first. Dogs with no history of noise fear often get through it fine on a normal routine.
Why does my dog get so anxious during the Calgary Stampede?
Fireworks are loud, unpredictable and come after dark, which is three things dogs dislike at once. Layer on ten days of parties, traffic and crowds, and a dog who was mildly uneasy beforehand can be a wreck by the end of the run.
