River Park and Sandy Beach with your dog
Ask a southwest dog where it wants to go on a Saturday and it will probably point at the ridge. River Park is the social park of Altadore and Marda Loop: a long grass bench above the Elbow, a beach below, and pathways that stitch the two together. The dogs are mostly friendly. The etiquette is mostly unwritten. Here is what the City designates, and what to train before you join the crowd.

Ridge and beach
Where the off-leash area begins and ends.
The City's off-leash map for this park shows three hatched areas under one listing: the long ridge strip on the Altadore side between 42 Avenue and 50 Avenue SW, a small piece on the opposite bank, and a slope along Britannia Drive SW. None of them is fenced. The Sandy Beach flats, with the picnic shelters, fire pits, seasonal washrooms and canoe access, sit outside the hatching, so the leash goes back on as you drop down to the river.
Both parks open at 5 a.m. and close at 11 p.m. River Park is 21 hectares of open grass and ridge edge, with a dog water fountain at the small memorial park inside it. Sandy Beach is 33 hectares below, with pathways, playgrounds and river access in season. Playgrounds are no-dog zones under the bylaw. The pathways and the parking lots are on-leash even where they touch the off-leash area, and a pathway leash can be no longer than two metres.

Recall off other dogs is the skill this park quietly grades. On an unfenced ridge the play group forms fast, and your dog needs to leave it when called, not when it feels finished. Add calm around cyclists and strollers on the shared pathways below, and water manners on the beach: wait at the edge, go in when released, come out when called, and shake somewhere that is not a picnic blanket.
Functional Off-Leash, a three-week board and train at $3,030 plus GST, teaches recall around real distractions and includes an Educator remote collar, introduced properly and taught to you at handover. If your dog already comes but loses its head near water and crowds, Private Training at $150 per hour with a written weekly plan rehearses water manners on a long line, then earns the release up on the ridge. Free follow-up sessions mean the first busy Saturday is not your first test.

Is River Park in Calgary off leash?
Yes. The City lists River Park, Sandy Beach and Britannia as one unfenced off-leash listing, and the hatched area on its map is the ridge on the Altadore side plus two smaller pieces. Off leash, a dog must stay within sight and come when called.
Is Sandy Beach a dog park?
Not in the way people mean. Sandy Beach is the riverside park below River Park with picnic sites, playgrounds and canoe access, and on the City's off-leash map the beach flats sit outside the off-leash hatching. Treat it as an on-leash walk and let the dog run up top.
What rules apply to dogs at River Park in Calgary?
Every dog needs a City of Calgary licence by three months old. Off leash it must stay visible to you and obey a voice or hand signal; on pathways and in parking lots it must be leashed, with a pathway leash no longer than two metres. Pick up after your dog every time; the City lists a $500 fine for not doing so.
Is the Sandy Beach dog park fenced?
No. The City's off-leash list marks the River Park, Sandy Beach and Britannia listing as unfenced, and the map shows fence lines along the ridge edge rather than an enclosed area. A reliable recall is the fence here.
