Nose Hill Park with your dog
Nose Hill is where Calgary dogs find out whether their recall is real. The hill is huge, open and unfenced, the wind never quite stops, and the coyotes were there first. Walk it well and it is the best hour a dog can have in the city. Walk it carelessly and you will meet a bylaw officer, a porcupine, or a very long afternoon of calling a name into the grass.

The hill itself
Over eleven hundred hectares of fescue, wind and coyotes, with no fence anywhere.
Nose Hill Park covers 1,129 hectares of rough fescue grassland in northwest Calgary, which the City calls one of the most significant examples of that ecosystem left on the Canadian prairies. From the plateau you can see the Rockies. You can also feel every gust; the hill is exposed to wind and to chinooks, which can change the air temperature by 15 to 20 degrees within hours. Deer and coyotes live in the grass year-round, and porcupines do too.
The City's off-leash map for Nose Hill (area NPK-001) draws the off-leash zone across the broad interior plateau, with on-leash ground on the slopes between most parking lots and the boundary signs. That layout is what makes it a test. Nothing is fenced, the sightlines run for hundreds of metres, and a deer can stand up out of the grass at any moment. A dog that comes back here, past that, has a recall you can trust anywhere in the city.

Walking it well
Leash up the slope, recall on the plateau, and respect the coyote's turf.
From any of the lots, clip the leash on and keep it on until you pass the posted off-leash sign. Then work recall in layers: call from ten metres, pay with a marker and a reward, and stretch the distance as the grass opens up. If a coyote appears, leash up, walk away calmly and never let the dog give chase; the City's advice is to never approach or feed one. Check for ticks after spring walks and carry water once afternoons pass 30.
Nose Hill recall is not a park-trained skill; it is built before you get there. Functional Off-Leash is the program for it: three weeks of board and train at $3,030 plus GST, recall proofed around real distractions, an Educator remote collar included and taught to you properly at handover. Advanced Off-Leash adds distance commands and off-leash heel over four weeks at $3,940. If your dog is under a year and still learning its name, start with Puppy Fundamentals and save the plateau for later.

Is Nose Hill Park off leash?
Partly. The City's map for Nose Hill marks a large designated off-leash area across the interior plateau, and everything outside that boundary is on-leash under the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw. Look for the posted off-leash signs before unclipping.
Where is the Nose Hill Park off leash area?
It is the broad plateau in the middle of the park, mapped by the City as area NPK-001. Most parking lots sit outside the boundary, so the walk up from the car is on leash. Check the City's interactive off-leash map before you go, since boundaries can change.
What should you do about coyotes at Nose Hill with a dog?
