The handover lesson: where board and train succeeds or fails
Every board and train we run, from two-week On-Leash Foundations to six weeks of Behaviour Rehab, ends the same way: a handover lesson. It is the hour where three or more weeks of daily training either transfers to you or quietly starts to leak away. We think it is the most important hour we sell, so here is how to spend it well.

The critical hour
Trained dogs keep the habits their people keep.
Here is the uncomfortable truth about any board and train, ours included: the dog is the easy half. After weeks of daily one-on-one work, your dog walks nicely, holds a place command, comes when called. The variable is the household the dog returns to. If the rules at home drift back to the old normal within a fortnight, the training drifts with them. That is not the dog being stubborn or the program wearing off. It is a dog doing what dogs do, reading what actually gets rewarded now, in this kitchen, with these people.
So the handover lesson is built to move the skills across the gap. You handle the leash, not us. We show you the marker timing, how each cue was taught, how to use the tools your dog trained on, whether that is a slip lead or an Educator e-collar, and exactly what standard to hold for each command. You will make mistakes in that lesson, which is the idea: better to fumble the timing in front of us than alone in your hallway in November. Leave with questions answered, not politely swallowed.

After pick-up
The first two weeks decide the next two years.
Make the handover count by treating it as the start of your training, not the end of your dog's. Keep the structure for the first stretch home: the routine, the place command during dinner, the walks done the way we showed you, even on the cold nights when shortcuts whisper. Write things down before you leave. Ask us to repeat the leash mechanics until your hands know them. The owners whose dogs still look trained a year later are rarely the ones with the easiest dogs. They are the ones who took the handover seriously.
You are not doing it alone, either. Every board and train includes free follow-up sessions, and the bigger programs stack more support on top: Puppy Fundamentals includes a follow-up within 60 days, while Advanced Off-Leash and Behaviour Rehab each carry two follow-ups. On-Leash Foundations adds lifetime phone and email support. Use all of it. A ten-minute email in week two beats a rescue mission in month six, and we would genuinely rather answer the small question early. The handover opens the door between your house and ours. Follow-ups are what keep it open.

What is a handover lesson in dog training?
It is the session at the end of a board and train where the trainer teaches the owner everything the dog learned: cues, tool use, timing, and standards. Every Northline K9 board and train includes one. It is the bridge between our training and your home.
Why does my dog listen to the trainer but not me?
Because your dog has a long history with the trainer's timing and standards and a longer history with yours. That gap is exactly what the handover lesson exists to close. Practise the mechanics we teach you and the gap shrinks fast.
Do board and train results last after the dog comes home?
They last when the household keeps the structure and standards the dog trained under. That is why we build the handover lesson and free follow-up sessions into every program. Dogs maintain what their owners maintain.
What should I ask at the handover lesson?
Ask about anything you are not sure you can repeat at home, and bring everyone who handles the dog day to day. Have us demonstrate the leash and tool mechanics until you can do them without coaching. Write down the daily standards before you leave.
