Every September we watch the same thing happen: the heat breaks, the crowds thin, and dogs who spent July panting in the shade suddenly want to work. We think fall is the honest window for off-leash training in Calgary. The season is short, the conditions are perfect, and the snow will close it soon enough. Here is how we would spend it.

Why fall works
The quiet months do half the work for you.
Recall fails in summer for boring reasons. It is hot, so sessions are short and dogs quit early. Every green space is full of picnics, toddlers, other dogs, and dropped hot dogs, which means your dog is being outbid every time you call. In fall the bidding war ends. Cool air lets a dog work for forty minutes instead of ten, and the competition mostly goes home. What is left is space, scent, and an owner with a pocket full of something good. Those are the conditions recall is actually built in.
There is a catch, and it is worth saying plainly: fall is also when scent gets loud. Cool, damp mornings hold smells close to the ground, leaves pile up and hide interesting things, and wildlife is on the move before winter. A dog who ignored the world in August may go nose-down in October. That is not a reason to keep the leash on forever. It is a reason to treat fall as proofing season: real distractions, manageable numbers, and a handler who calls once and means it.

Our fall recipe is not complicated. Start every session on a long line, even with a dog who has been off leash all summer. Call, pay generously, release back to sniffing, and repeat until coming to you stops costing the dog anything. Add distance before you add distractions, and add distractions before you drop the line. When your dog turns on the first call with another dog in view, you have earned the empty trail. Most owners rush this ladder in a weekend. The dogs that finish it over six weeks are the ones still reliable in spring.

When is the best time of year to train recall in Calgary?
Fall, in our opinion. Cooler weather lets dogs work longer, the summer crowds are gone, and distraction levels drop to something a learning dog can handle. You get roughly September through the first lasting snow to build the habit.
Can I let my dog off leash if his recall is not perfect?
Not yet, and fall is the right time to fix that. Use a long line so freedom never depends on luck, and pay every recall like it matters. Drop the line only once your dog turns on the first call around real distractions.
How long does it take to train a reliable recall?
