Canada Day lost-dog prevention
July 1 is a wonderful night to be a person and a hard night to be a dog. The sky explodes, the yard fills with visitors, and doors swing open every few minutes. That combination sends dogs over fences and through gates every year. The good news: almost every escape route can be closed in an afternoon, and the rest is training you can start today.

Before the party
Close every exit while it is still daylight.
Walk the fence line like a dog would: nose height, not eye height. Check gate latches, the gap behind the shed, the spot where the retaining wall shortens the fence. Then move the risk indoors. On fireworks night, the dog goes out on leash, every single time, even in a fenced yard, because a panicked dog can clear or dig under a fence you trusted for years. Update the ID tag if your number has changed, confirm your microchip registration, and take a clear photo of your dog in daylight. You will probably never need it. Do it anyway.
If you are hosting, the front door is your weakest point. Give the dog a room far from the entrance, close the door, and put a sign on it so a helpful guest does not let the party in. Load the room before sunset: water, a chew, a frozen food toy, a fan or radio for sound cover, curtains drawn. A dog who has eaten dinner in that room all week will settle there far faster than one who gets locked in as the first shell goes up. Guests can meet the dog tomorrow, when the sky is quiet.

The recall question
A kitchen recall will not survive the sky.

How do I keep my dog from running away during fireworks?
Keep the dog indoors from dusk onward, in a closed room away from doors, with sound cover and something to chew. Every trip outside happens on leash, even in a fenced yard. Most escapes are gates and doors, not fence-jumping heroics, so manage the humans too.
Should my dog wear anything special on Canada Day?
A flat collar with current ID tags, and a snug fit you can only get two fingers under. If your dog is a known flight risk, a well-fitted harness with the leash attached is safer than trusting a collar. Skip retractable leashes entirely on fireworks nights.
What do I do if my dog gets loose on fireworks night?
Resist chasing, panicked dogs are faster than we are. Crouch, keep your voice light, and toss food if the dog is in sight. If not, leave a gate open with familiar-smelling items near the door and start telling neighbours right away.
