What is the difference between obedience and behaviour training?
Owners arrive with a dog who knows every cue and still cannot walk past a stroller. The instinct is to train harder, because the dog clearly learns fast. But the dog did learn. It learned to sit, and it also learned, separately and long ago, that strollers are frightening. Obedience addresses the first lesson. Behaviour training addresses the second. Knowing which you are dealing with saves months of practising the wrong thing very well.

Skills versus feelings
The sit is a skill; the lunge is a feeling.
Obedience is a vocabulary. The dog learns that a word or hand signal predicts a reward, then learns to perform it with distance, duration and distractions stacked on. It is measurable: either the dog held the down for two minutes while a ball bounced past or it did not. It is what Puppy Fundamentals, On-Leash Foundations and both off-leash programs are built from, and for most dogs it is all they need. Good obedience gives the dog a clear way to be right.
Behaviour training works under the vocabulary. A dog who lunges at other dogs is not disobeying; it is over threshold, flooded with fear or frustration, and in that state the part of the brain that knows sit is not answering the phone. Behaviour work changes what the trigger predicts, at a distance where the dog can still think, and shrinks that distance over weeks. The dog may sit at the end of it. It just no longer needs to be told to.

Which one, and where
Read the dog first, then pick the program.
Ask one question: does the dog do the behaviour when calm? A dog who pulls, jumps on guests, ignores recall and counter-surfs while perfectly relaxed has a skills problem, and obedience fixes it. On-Leash Foundations, two weeks at $1,865 plus GST, covers loose-leash walking, heel, stays and place; Functional and Advanced Off-Leash add recall and distance work over three and four weeks. Puppies get the same vocabulary plus structured socialization in Puppy Fundamentals, which is behaviour prevention disguised as obedience.
If the behaviour only shows up when the dog is scared, furious or frantic, that is Behaviour Rehab territory: five to six weeks of board and train for anxiety, reactivity and aggression, customized after a full assessment and priced from $4,850 to $5,760 plus GST. Obedience still gets taught inside it, because a dog needs a calm job to do while its feelings change, but the skills are the scaffolding rather than the building. The assessment decides which one you are looking at.

Obedience vs behaviour training: which does a reactive dog need?
Behaviour training, with obedience woven in. Reactivity is an emotional response to a trigger, and no amount of sit practice changes what the trigger means to the dog. The obedience gives the dog something calm to do once the feelings are dialled down.
What is the difference between obedience and behavior training for a puppy?
For a puppy they are nearly the same thing. Teaching cues with rewards and exposing the puppy to sounds, surfaces and calm dogs at the right pace builds both skills and a stable emotional baseline. That is why Puppy Fundamentals mixes structured socialization with the basic commands.
Is behaviour modification the same as obedience training?
No. Behaviour modification targets the underlying response: fear, frustration, guarding, panic. Obedience targets performance of cues, and a dog can be excellent at one and untouched by the other.
Can dog behaviour training and obedience be done at the same time?
Yes, and in Behaviour Rehab they are. The behaviour work runs at a distance the dog can handle while obedience gives structure to the rest of the day. The two reinforce each other as long as nobody mistakes a good sit for a fixed problem.
