How long does it take to train a dog?
The honest answer has two parts. Teaching a skill takes weeks. Keeping it takes years, because a dog is always learning something, whether or not anyone is teaching. So the question is really two questions: how long until the dog understands, and how long until the dog is reliable when the squirrel, the doorbell or the off-leash stranger shows up. Both have answers, and neither is forever.

The weeks by goal
Learning is fast, proofing is the slow part.
A dog can understand what sit, down, place and a loose leash mean within days when the reps are clean and daily. Understanding is not the finish line. The dog has to perform those skills in the kitchen, on the sidewalk, past another dog and with a stranger at the door, and that proofing is what fills the second and third week of a board and train. The bigger the goal, the more environments must be covered before the skill counts as reliable.
Off-leash work stretches to four weeks because distance and distraction stack up: the dog has to hold a heel with no leash, come off a running rabbit and take a down from across a field. Behaviour change is slower again, five to six weeks, because the job is not adding a skill but replacing a habit the dog has rehearsed for months or years. Then comes the unglamorous part: maintenance, a few minutes most days, for as long as you have the dog.

What moves the timeline in either direction.
Daily repetition is the biggest accelerator, which is why a board and train can compress into a couple of weeks what weekly sessions spread across months. Age helps too: a puppy with no bad habits learns faster than an adult who has spent three years pulling. Tools matched to the dog, markers and rewards taught first, and a routine where sleep, meals and training happen at the same times each day all shave time off. So does an owner who practises the handover lesson.
Three things slow it down. A long rehearsal history: a dog who has lunged at other dogs for years has a deep groove to climb out of. Inconsistency at home: if one person allows the couch and another forbids it, the dog learns neither rule. Skipping maintenance: a dog trained in three weeks and then left alone for six months will drift back toward whatever is easiest. How long does it take to train a dog?

Leash manners and household obedience sit at the short end, behaviour problems like reactivity or aggression at the long end. Reliability in new places keeps building for months after the program ends.
How long does dog training take if we do it ourselves with weekly sessions?
The pace is set by how faithfully the plan is practised between sessions. Private Training at $150 per one-hour session comes with a written weekly plan, and the daily reps are on you. Expect months rather than weeks, and expect skipped weeks to stretch the timeline more than anything else.
How long to train a dog basic commands?
