How long does it take to train a dog with separation anxiety?
Separation anxiety is not a training problem in the usual sense. The dog is not misbehaving; the dog is panicking, and panic does not respond to a firmer voice or a longer walk. What works is slow, systematic exposure to being alone, in doses the dog can handle, for as long as it takes. That is measured in weeks and months. Anyone quoting days has not met a truly anxious dog.

Graduated absences

The method is simple to describe and tedious to do. Find the dog's threshold: the length of absence they can handle before the pacing, drooling or howling starts. For some dogs that is thirty seconds with the door closed. Then leave for slightly less than that, return calmly, and repeat until it is boring. Only then does the absence grow. Pre-departure cues like keys, shoes and a coat get the same treatment, practised on their own until they stop predicting anything.
Mild cases, where the dog settles after some initial fussing, can reach a couple of calm hours within a few weeks. Severe cases, where the dog injures itself at the door or cannot eat when alone, take months, and this is where medication matters. Prescribed by a veterinarian, it can lower the baseline panic enough that training has something to work with. We will say so plainly if that conversation needs to happen before the protocol can move.
