The honest answer has a condition attached. A dog that spends two to four weeks living inside a structured routine, with a trainer handling every repetition, comes home changed. Whether the change lasts depends on what happens at the handover lesson and in the weeks after it. So the real question is not whether board and train works. It is whether the program was built to survive the trip home.

Two conditions
The two conditions that separate results from a kennel stay.
Board and train earns its reputation, good or bad, on what fills the hours. At Northline every program is one-on-one, with no group classes, so the dog is never waiting its turn. A dog in On-Leash Foundations gets fourteen days of loose-leash walking, heel, sit, down, stay and place, taught with markers and rewards and then proofed around everyday distractions. That volume of clean repetition is hard to produce on evenings and weekends, and it is why the skills take hold quickly.
The second condition is you. A dog that only responds to the trainer has not been trained; it has been rented. The handover lesson exists to close that gap: you learn the cues, the timing, the tools and the mistakes we already made so you do not repeat them. Then you carry it on at home, which is where habits either set or dissolve. Programs that skip this step send home a dog with skills nobody in the house can access.

Thirty, sixty, ninety
What working looks like at 30, 60 and 90 days.
At 30 days home, a working result looks like a dog that still holds the skills in familiar places: the walk is loose, place holds while dinner is made, the recall comes when the yard is quiet. Some slippage is normal and is not a failure. This is when the first free follow-up session earns its keep, because a trainer can spot where your timing drifted and fix it in an hour.
By 60 days the skills should be showing up in harder places: a busy pathway, a friend's kitchen, a patio. By 90 days they should feel like the dog's personality rather than something you cue. Does board and train actually work, or does the dog forget everything at home?
The dog does not forget; the household stops asking. Skills built over daily one-on-one sessions are durable, but they need the same cues and the same rules at home, which is what the handover lesson teaches. Keep the routine for the first month and the skills stay.
Do board and train programs work for every dog?
No, and a trainer who says otherwise is selling. Dogs with a specific medical driver, and some households that cannot attend a handover or keep a routine, get better value from Private Training at $150 per one-hour session. We recommend the smaller option when it is the right one.
Is board and train effective compared to weekly private lessons?
For volume, yes. Two weeks of daily training delivers more clean repetitions than months of one lesson a week with homework in between. Private lessons win when the problem lives in one room of your house, or when you want to learn every step yourself.
Does board and train work if nobody at home has time to train?
Not for long. The program builds the skills, but a household that never cues them lets them fade. If the calendar is the real problem, Day Training at $650 per week keeps the dog home every night and includes a weekly one-hour go-home lesson, which is a smaller ask than a full board and train.
